Dear Professor and Classmates, The concept of race is a topic that has not changed much over the many years human have been on this earth. Race by definition is a group of people who share a set of characteristics not always physical characteristics, also it is said that these groups of people share and common bloodline (Conley, 2015). Many sociologists argue that race is a social construction.…
In the film “Race: The Power of an Illusion” we see that athletics is one arena where talking about ideas of inborn racial differences remains common. We have to wonder why that is. Whenever we see or hear about people playing certain sports we as human beings automatically assume that a certain race will dominate that sport. For example, in the film they talked about how African American people were considered the best at running due to our social profiling of them over a long period of time.…
For centuries, it was believed that the darker your skin the less intelligent you are. People with darker skin were compared to monkeys because it was believed that they evolved from apes. They were separated and treated completely different from white people, one could say they were treated like animals. It took years for mankind to learn that the color of your skin does not make you different from the next person. In fact, we learned that every human being is almost the same.…
In the dictionary, “race” is defined as any one of the groups that human beings can be divided into based on shared distinctive physical trait. When the Europeans began to mark their territory after settling in America, they began dividing peoples into groups by distinctive physical traits essentially creating the idea of race in the eighteenth century. They acknowledged the obvious differences in the way they looked and how they lived their lives, and used this to create groups and divide people into the groups that suited them the best. Once, the groups were in place, the English established dominance and power over all peoples. Race has been said to consist of biological factors by just about everyone, but through careful research and analysis, it is quite clear that race does not exist, rather it is a social construct made to differentiate…
The third module, “Diversity and Changing,” at the time of engagement of the material was considered very enlightening, but throughout the semester, the personal value of portions of the information provided has decreased. A secondary text titled, “Cultural Diversity in Health and Interest” written by Rachel Spector provided interesting information in regard to racial classification. As diversity has undoubtedly increased in the United States because of immigration and births, the government has thus created a way to indicate the amount of diversity present in the country via the 2010 Census (Cultural Diversity in Health and Interest, Spector, pg. 45). Unfortunately, the previous mention of racial and diversity indication and classification…
he difference between race and ethnicity is that race is associated with biology whereas ethnicity is associated with culture. Race and ethnicity can obviously overlap, but they are distinct. For example, a bi-racial person would probably consider themselves as a member of a certain race, but, if they don't engage in any of the practices or customs of their ancestors, they might not identify with the ethnicity, but might instead consider themselves to be a member of their counterpart race. The United States is a unique country due to the convergence of multiple races within itself. Even though the people who live in the US bring with them their cultural identity from wherever they came from, it becomes influenced by American culture.…
When sociologists say race is a social construct, they are not being soft-headed dolt; they are speaking an historical truth. It means that society decides how each race and ethnicity is defined. According to Dalton Conley “race refer to a group of people who share a set of characteristics.” It has to do with Socialization. None are born with racist attitudes, values or beliefs.…
Social construction is not as definitive as actual objects and is defined by culture which changes as time goes on, more specifically defined by society’s dominant group. With this definition the basis of race continually changes. When the Africans were first brought to the United States as indentured servants they were considered objects, this definition then changed as they were later considered “free man” as slavery was abolished although his still gave a stigma to the race. As time moved on the African American race was based upon skin color and heritage and less upon the social status. “First, race is a social construct contingent on collective acceptance, agreement, and imposition.…
The resources, I pick explain how social construct play a big role in race. Today’s society, see race as being treated unequal and who have the most power. As I look for sources, the keywords I use was; power, unequal, identity, socially constructed, black and white. While finding my source, I try to force on what stands out the most. I force more on the social construct of race because I feel like children learn by society.…
Many biological and social anthropologists argue race is a cultural construct. We can’t define acts of injustice by examining race as independent of biological/genetic variations. Scholars discovered race didn’t exist in the 17TH century but race originated as a folk idea-it was a social invention, not a product of science. More than 400 years ago in the 1600’s Englishmen came to America seeking fortunes. They planned to overthrow the Indians by enslavement and obtain their wealth.…

The Role of Race In Romantic Attraction to Race in Intercultural Dating Attraction is a popular field of study in psychology. In a mixed society that we exemplify today in America, it is common to see people of multiple races and ethnicities but what influences race and ethnicity have on everyday life such as it pertains to attraction is something that we are still discovering. Looking back in history, interracial communication and living is a new progression. Although the general population may not always consider how races and ethnicities play a role in our procreation and attraction to sexual partners, empirical evidence supports that race effects attraction (McClintock,& Murry, (2010). Observing how race effects attraction, and what effects…
Race vs. Ethnicity. Race can be de defined as a group of persons related by common descent or hereditary. Ethnicity can be defined as an ethnic group; a social group that shares a common and distinctive culture, religion and language. Race and ethnicity have many similarities but also many differences, your race can sometimes narrow down your ethnicity and if you know what ethnicity you are, you definitely know your race. You can tell a person’s race just by their physical appearance, but ethnicity is so much more complex, you can see the color of a person’s skin but that does not really tell you much information of their ethnic background.…
Despite the misunderstanding about race and ethnicity, many Sociologist has formed many different perspectives of them both. These theories helped others have a view of them from different perspectives. I find the Conflict Theory to me more clearly at justifying the relevance of both race and ethnicity. There are what’s called racial groups, minority groups, race, ethnic groups, all these are a vital part of a culture. Now to put in the perspective of the Conflict Theory I will be explaining the relevance it has in race and ethnicity by pointing out the strong supporting views such as; discrimination, prejudice, and exploitation theory.…
Ethnicity, race, and nationalism are interrelated. We cannot define one concept without elaborating how the other concept plays a crucial role to shape up its agenda. Such as, Nationalism derives from ethnic beliefs, and from cultural religious similarities. Nationalism deliberately supports it 's deeply enrooted believes towards ethnicity. However, race plays a significant role to distinguish the differences between ethnicity and race itself.…
