In The Giver a way freedom is taken away is that they cannot pick their own spouse. Each spouse is chosen carefully, and through a long process to ensure compatibility. Though this almost completely abolishes fighting or divorce, and allows perfect harmony, it is still unfair to the people in the community because they do not get to choose their own spouse. “All the factors-disposition, energy level, intelligence, and interests - had to correspond and to interact perfectly.”(Lowry 48). This is different from modern day society because in our society we do not usually have ceremonies, we only have birthdays to celebrate us turning a year older. In ‘The Ceremony of the Twelve’ Jonas and all the other elevens that become twelves are given their jobs that they will have the rest of their lives. Which is also different from our society, we usually get jobs at the age of about sixteen and we choose the field we want to be in, it isn’t chosen for us. “Unlike his father, he had no idea what his Assignment would be.”(Lowery 16).
