Ideal Body Types of American Women Throughout History
This project will delve into the ideal bodies that have emerged throughout the past century, and possible causes for the change in ideals. Accompanying this paper will be a series of drawings depicting the bodies that I, after researching, have decided are most representative of ideals at that time. For this assignment I chose five documents to study, which I thought would be useful for my research and would provide enough information to build a substantial project on. U.S. Trends in Feminine Beauty and Overadaptation by Allan Mazur talks about the various trends and explains how they came into fashion, this writing also emphasizes the trend of women being depicted as slender in the late 1990s. From Marilyn Monroe to Cindy Crawford: A Historical Analysis of Women’s Body Image Depicted in Popular Magazines from 1952 to 1995 by Jayme S. Nobles discusses the climate of the 1950s and 1960s as well as the background of the late 1900s and talks about the emergence of diet culture in the 1980s and 90s and how it correlated with the rise in obesity rates. I used the three studies by Sung-Yeon Park, Julie M. Sparhawk, and Kristen E. Van Vonderen and William Kinnally to gain a better understanding of how ideal body standards form and the role that media portrayal of women and their bodies can play in this idea of a “perfect” female body.
