Wells was born in 1862 in Holly Springs, MS where both of her parents were slaves. Her mother and father both died when she was just 16 years old from yellow fever. Having to mature at a very young age, Wells took the initiative to raise her younger siblings with the help of her family. She was able to further her education where she grew to love the works of Shakespeare. Ida B. Wells then became a teacher to support her family, later moving to Memphis,TN. Ida B. Wells decided to write about Moss’s death in her paper, Free Speech, which almost costed her her life. The whites destroyed her newspaper office where she worked. Wells decided to stay in New York and publish , The Truth About Lynching, an article explaining what she really thought about the white men and women in America. In this article she expressed that some white women chose to be friends with black men and that black women could not dare look at white men. She initiated boycotts and strikes to be held by blacks to protest lynchings. Wells purchased a gun for her protection, but journalism was her primary weapon to fight
