Tree Rings and Ice Cores for Climate-Research There are many forms of climate-research methods. Also, greenhouse gases have trapped heat in the atmosphere affecting climate change. One of the forms of climate-research methods are tree rings. In climate-research tree rings are used because trees have growth rings which can show how many years the tree has been through, the weather, and the growth season that the tree has endured. Ice cores are also used in climate-research.…
The theme of empowerment is found both in “When It Changed” by Joanna Russ, and “A Rock Trying To Be A Stone” by Sergio Troncoso. Additionally, the characters in both stories express their eagerness, self sufficiency, and self awareness. It is essential to discuss self characteristics as such, along with empowerment because of the simple fact that it is relevant to society, and we can learn from it. Empowerment is something people should be aware of today, because it encourages, and motivates to be the best person you can be. Additionally it strengthens character, being powerful and confident.…

The sculpture I chose to write about is Earthworks. Earthworks are a large scale of modern sculptures created partially by environment and partially by man. The larger the sculpture the more visible they are from above. One famous earthwork is by Robert Smithson, Spiral Jetty. It was created on the Great Salt Lake in Utah.…
Does rock salt effect ice? Rock salt effects the boiling and freezing point of ice. Salt has always helped the roads when it is icy in the winter, but a new idea for the roads may be the use of beet juice. In group A with the little bit of ice and water, that we continued to stir, the temperature decreased from 2°C to .5°C in five minutes.…
She uses a very clear form of imagery in this poem as she states “Odor of metal faint, persistent.” You can taste and smell the metal that makes the poem more interesting. She also uses personification to really layer the poem. She wrote “When you look at the face of time” Time isn’t alive. It doesn’t have a face, yet she uses this figurative language to convey the full effect and emotion.…
Jackman Responses The first response is from pages 195-210 from Ian Jackman’s book, “The Artist’s Mentor.” Throughout these pages there are various quotes and examples of what it means and feels to be an artist. Sungwoong Lee My brother and I watched the film Chasing Ice together on Wednesday. I watched all of the trailers that were on the list. My first experience of snow was like a snow globe, except it seemed whoever was shaking it wasn’t going to stop. Snow Globes are a model of a scene surrounded by particles of fake, white matter resembling snow, but when shaken it turns to a magnificent snowstorm. While I have many snow globes at my house collected from my childhood, this was the first one I was in. I think a lot about the countless times my dad has told me of stories of his childhood. His numerous adventures of snow days, seasonal change, and free time in the backyard.…
The first thing I see is it’s blue color. It is illuminated through many panels of Plexiglas and gives me the feeling of mysterious and calm. The second thing I noticed is that the sculpture itself has an abstract concept. The broken Plexiglas signifies the sharp edges of the ice and the more dangerous, mysterious side of an iceberg, but the light in the middle calms that feeling and instead, reflecting the pureness and the peacefulness of the ice. Plexiglas are 2D, but stacking it and making a sculpture makes it 3D. Ice, a frozen form of water, consists of that only component, but inside the ice, water forms different pattern, different lines, or even contains imagination inside.…
Finial, a gilt bronze ornament created in the 18th century and currently displayed in the Arts of Asia department, has a two visual elements, shape and space. This art piece has organic shape where there is the wavy form of water and bodies of two fish. These two organic shapes contribute to the piece as they exist in the same environment. In Buddhism art, fish in water represent happiness because they are free to swim in the water. This 3D piece has a geometric circle shape that connects every piece of the ornament together, including the water and fish.…

Artists are the visual history takers of any given generation. They help to keep records of the progress of society, the challenges faced by a community and the things we use to find peace in our times of need. Two artists that serve as major player in early 1960s to the present day are Jonathan Borofsky and Michael Heizer, both men are American artists that specialize in sculptures though their art forms are different, they share a basic love of art and view that the process to create art that is loved is more important that the monetary gains or commercial appeal of their creations. Jonathan Borofsky is known for his super-human sized art pieces that provide a specific location that can be used to reflect and help separate people from the…
Critical Appreciation of M.H. Abrams’s “Orientation of critical theories” M.H. Abrams’s The Mirror and the Lamp: romantic theories and the critical traditions is one of the most influential books in the field of western criticism. It was published in the year of 1953. The title of the book refers to the two contradictory metaphors used to portray the artist – one comparing the artist to a mirror that reflects nature as it is or perfected whereas the other compares the artist to a lamp that illuminates the object under consideration. Professor Abrams in his book illustrates the transition of the perspective of the theorists on the artist from one to the other and the ramifications of the latter in aesthetics, poetics and practical criticism.…
