Ice Storm Themes

Improved Essays
Which way should I go? Did you ever feel like your actions that you thought was right was a wrong action? The story called “What happened during an Ice Storm” by Jim Heynen, have many strong themes. One of the main theme is help others and be sympathetic. An example from the story such as “ they would be covered in ice too”, “glazed in egg white.” , and “unborn birds” shows how the pheasants are suffering from the ice storm and how intense the situation was. The boys also did it their way because the farmers would’ve just thought pheasants were food. For example, you have to choose a choice of getting lots of money and saving someone from a fall. If you chose the fall, then that means you are a hero because you sacrificed the money for saving

These courageous heroes didn’t even think twice about the possible harmful consequences of their actions. It’s 1965, you’re lost in the heart of a small town in Oklahoma, you see a “greasy” young boy get jumped by older, more fortunate boys, who comes to his rescue? Not a superhero in a cape, but a real human, a flawed person with all of their insecurities and past experiences. This is what a real hero looks like. Two unlikely heroes emerge in S.E. Hinton’s young adult fiction, “The Outsiders”. Dally Winston and Darry Curtis are heroes not because they save the town, but because of the little things they do, as Edgar Watson Howe once said, “A boy doesn’t have to go to war to be a hero; he can say he doesn’t like pie when he sees there isn’t enough to go around.”…

I have chosen to analyze the essay, “Heroism: Why Heroes are Important”. The article was written by a Professor of Philosophy, Scott LaBarge. He unquestionably felt strongly that a person having a hero is vitally important. He goes in depth about his personal hero Thoreau, and he claims that he wouldn’t know where he’d be without him (1). He talks about how deep this connection from his hero is through being convinced “that living deliberately meant becoming a philosopher” (1).…

Throughout the entire essay, imagery is used to create a feeling of love instead of pain and suffering. This being another underlying literary theme. Annie uses the metaphor “was the whole weasel still attached to his feathered throat, a fur pendant?” (Dillard) to show the fearlessness of the weasel. Another example of a metaphor in the non-fiction states, “Our eyes were interlocked, and someone threw away the key” (Dillard).…

Shannon L. Alder once said, “Heroes are not made. They are born out of circumstances and rise to the occasion when their spirit can no longer coexist with the hypocrisy injustice to others.” However not everyone can be a hero.
