Case Study Of Als Ice Bucket Challenge

Decent Essays
The ALS ice bucket challenge was one of those amazing marketing strategies you see once in a blue moon. In the dead heat of summer here comes a challenge to dump ice and water over your head for a worthy cause. The intent of the challenge was to bring awareness to ALS and to raise money. The marketing was great, but I think people could have donated to other causes than ALS. Also People did the challenge not really knowing what ALS was or explained what it was, and that is what truly made me disagree with the campaign all together. To begin with, the ice bucket challenge was a great marketing strategy, and the timing was perfect. What better time to soak yourself with ice cold water than in the middle of summer when you have kids home from …show more content…
The true intent of the challenge according to Chicago Tribune article Say 'No! ' to the ice bucket challenge “Those who declined the ice bath were compelled to give $100 to a charity of the challenger 's choice.” Instead of donating to the charity of their choice most donations were made to ALS. The original intent was shifted and because of this I disagreed with the challenge. To be realistsic most people don’t donate to a worthy cause, not because they don’t want to but because financially they feel they can’t. The ones that do donate have one maybe two that they decide they want to donate to and set a certain amount of money away to donate to that charity. Since the ALS challenge was so big most people donated to ALS and now other charitys that would have received a donation from those people are no longer going to. Don’t get me wrong the cause is a good one, but more people should have been aware or the reprocaution that this is now going to have on other charity …show more content…
I would watch my news feed on Facebook and see all my friends saying “I’m accepting the ALS ice bucket challenge.” I would watch them pour ice water over their head and nominate the next few that had to participate in the challenge. I never once heard what ALS was. I had even asked a few people that had done the challenge and they couldn’t tell me, all they could say it’s a real worthy cause and a lot of celebrities have been getting involved. After a few weeks of trying to figure it out I finally found a web site that answered my question. The ALS Association says “Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig 's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.” I wish this information would have been given when people were participating in the

Stem Cell Assignment 1. Summary of “Your Inner Healers” New scientific discoveries have shown that adult mouse cells can be “rewound” to once again be pluripotent like they were in their former embryonic state by adding a mixture of genes to the cells (called induced Pluripotent Stem Cells, or iPSCs). This contradicts the natural progression of cells’ potency as they age: in their early formation, embryonic cells have the ability to mature into any one of the 220 types of human cells, and soon after that they begin to lose potency and are only multipotent — able to develop into just a few different types of cells, until finally they become terminally differentiated, and therefore unable to develop into any other types of cells.…
