Daedalus "encouraged and instructed him in all the fatal art" (345-336). When parents hover or helicopter and warn about the dangers in an excessive manner, it counteracts their intended purpose. As stated in the text, Daedalus warned, “My son, I caution you to keep, the middle way, for if your pinions dip, too low the waters may impede your flight, and if they soar too high the sun may scorch them" (320-322). Then Icarus soared up high in the sky and ended up falling from the sky. In a way it’s like saying, “Don’t push the red button,” which makes us more intrigued about what is the outcome of pushing the red button. Red is commonly associated with the feeling of danger. For example, a firetruck or a police car with its flashing red lights means there must be something dangerous going on. With such a negative connotation attached to the color red, it is clear that people are not supposed to touch the button. Yet people still touch it, which is why teens do it. We have to look deeper into problems like texting and driving. The majority of people wholeheartedly think that it is because of the teenagers’ risky behavior. Although risky behavior is part of the problem, parents’ hovering behavior also contributes to this problem. In the end these factors are leading to a communication gap that is widening as this unhealthy relationship is not changing.
