Icarus Relationship

Bechdel opened up her story showing the readers how close her relationship is with her father. Bruce was doing the “airplane” game with Alison. However, she falls down soon after (Bechdel 3). She used the Greek mythology of Daedalus and Icarus to suggest that perhaps it isn't only the child who can take Icarus’ position: "In our particular reenactment of this mythic relationship, it was not me but my father who was to plummet from the sky" (Bechdel 4). Daedalus was the master of craftsman. He made two pairs of wings out of wax and feathers for himself and his son, Icarus. Daedalus warned his son not to fly too close to the sun, or else it would melt the wings. Nor fly too low near the sea because it would make the wings hard to fly. Consequently,

    Icarus Sexton Analysis

Sexton uses imagery and diction to convey an excited or praising tone. “Pumping… Tunnelling… wondrously” are all words Sexton used to describe Icarus’ flight, they consistently bring out how this flight is thrilling. While Sexton’s shift away from Icarus’ flight the tone become becomes boorish as Daedalus is “sensible” while going straight to town. Sexton describes Icarus’ first moment in flight as “flawless,” then giving images of the trees “as awkward as camels,” she praises Icarus in his perfection of flight and detachment from the land. To conclude Sexton’s praising and excited tone comes from using matching imagery and diction.…

All our lives we’ve been taught to follow the rules, but what happens when we don’t? In Greek mythology Icarus dares to face the sun and as a result fails to follow the rules of flying. Examples of the Icarus tales are Ovid’s “Metamorphoses” and the short story “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut. These authors tell the story of boys who pushed the limit which resulted in their deaths. By comparing the two stories, we can see how the plot, character, and message change from story to story and create new meanings over time.…

By his end, he has mastered the art of artifice. To start off the memoir, Bechdel makes it a point to explain the distractions Bruce creates for himself in his life. He is constantly busy with some project he has assigned himself; whether it is revamping his old broken down home or just decorating for the holidays. Bruce treats his kids like they are extensions of his body and has them do tasks for him. He is so consumed with his objective that he, like Daedalus, is…

Bechdel uses fiction to understand her life as it was and to analyze her upbringing while looking back. In this same way, she uses literature to understand memories of her father. Bechdel’s father, Bruce’s outward appearance did not match who he was on the inside. He created a façade to contort societal opinions of who he truly was. Looking back on her life, Bechdel uses literature to create parallels and connections between her father and herself.…

It is not until the end of the novel that she forms a concrete conclusion on the way this metaphor fits with her story. In an elegant parallel to the first image in the novel, Bechdel ends the book on a matching note. She depicts two images on the page: one of the truck that contributed to her father's demise and one of herself once again as a small child, jumping into the arms of her father. The text on the page goes to say that while her father is truly Icarus-unable to heed warnings and plummets to his death-she, too, is Icarus. The primary difference being that she was able to look at his example and not make the same mistakes.…

The narrator frequently “[has] dreams where [he is] flying… [which is his] favourite dream” (147) as well as asking God to “make [him] a bird-[as] that’s all [he’s] ever wanted. This desire to fly or become a bird is used to symbolize the narrator’s desire to run away from all his human problems and be free of the pain and sadness caused by the human condition. This is that since these birds have the capability of flying wherever they please; they truly can escape. That is something that the storyteller cannot do, no matter how hard he tries. He cannot flee from his problems forever and so in turn, he must face these conflicts just as any other individual would.…
