Ic Solutions Case Study

IC Solutions, which is a subsidiary of Keefe Group, provides inmate telephone service inside jails and prisons. Family members set up accounts so that their inmate can make calls to them with a prepaid account or to any facility-approved phone number with a debit telephone account. With prepaid accounts, inmates can receive voice messages if the facility subscribes to the service, however, the message is billed at the same rate that it costs inmates to make calls.

It's expensive to fund an inmate's telephone account, however, as one person said in a review of the company, the service is a necessary evil. IC Solutions could not provide inmate communications service at the same rate that consumers pay for home telephone service.

When faced with the difficult reality of mass incarceration, and the high rates of women of color incarcerated in our federal prison system, we are often left wondering what we as mere college students can do. While our position against this unjust reality seems very small, one of the things we can do is provide educational resources to women of color in prison by donating our old books – whether these be our old college textbooks or any. There is very strong evidence out there that suggests that prisoners that are allowed access to education resources while in prison are more likely to thrive once released, and their chance of being re-incarcerated is lowered. In an interview with NPR following the Obama administration’s step toward expanding access of the Pell grant to adult prisoners, Lois Davis of the RAND corporation (a research organization that develops solutions to public policy challenges) said that education is the centerpiece of an effective re-entry into society, and a better way to spend our tax dollars: “Education is a relatively low-cost program you can provide to inmates. But, when you look simply at direct…

Mass incarceration has created racial discrepancies among those being incarcerated. Many studies have been conducted to study the causes of these discrepancies and almost all of these studies have found that African Americans and other minority groups accounts for the vast majority of the prison population. In 1991 Albonetti found on her study that African Americans are more likely to be convicted and received longer sentences than their Caucasian counterparts (Kamalu, 2010, p. 2). Another study by Spohn found that when African Americans are male, unemployed, young, and the offense is not serious, then they are more likely to be convicted than Caucasians that fit the same characteristics of those African Americans (Kamalu, 2010, p. 3).…
