Purpose

Ibuprofen is one of the most common over-the-counter medications. It reduces pain and inflammation by limiting certain hormones. The drug is taken orally, usually in the form of a pill, and is absorbed into the bloodstream once it dissolves. Both human saliva and human stomach acid aid in dissolving the pill. Human saliva has a pH of about 6, and stomach acid has a pH of approximately 2. The purpose of this investigation is to discover whether the pH of a solution will affect the time needed to dissolve the ibuprofen.

Hypothesis
If the pH of a liquid is increases, then the solubility rate of Ibuprofen will decrease because acidic liquid breaks down Ibuprofen at a quicker pace. This means that vinegar should dissolve the pill at the fastest rate and the soap water should dissolve it at the slowest rate.

Record the time in seconds
Step 6: Dump out the water and the pill, and clean the cup if you need to
Step 7: Repeat steps 4-6 nine more times and record the times. Average all the times
Step 8: Fill cup B with 120 mL of vinegar and repeat steps 4-7, but with cup B
Step 9: Fill cup C with 120 mL of ginger ale and repeat steps 4-7 with cup C
Step 10: Fill cup D with 120 mL of tomato juice and repeat steps 4-7 with cup D
Step 11: Fill cup E with 120 mL of bleach
Step 12: Repeat steps 4-7 with cup E
Step 13: Fill cup F with 120 mL of water and add 30 mL of dish detergent and stir.
Step 14: Repeat steps 4-7 with cup F.
Step 15: Put on safety gloves
Step 16: Fill cup G with 120 mL of water and add 15 mL of salt. Stir
Step 17: Repeat steps 4-7 with cup G
