In Praise of Margins
“In Praise of Margin” by Ian Frazier, Frazier reflects on his childhood to manifest the importance of margins, which involve any type of activity having no certain purpose to. In his case, it is the woods. He concludes that these activities are very important to our ordinary lives, providing some sort of comfort. He continues to argue that marginal activities should continue to be done; he provides an amount of examples of the wonders these marginal activities provide to kids at such a young age. But as time progresses we slowly begin to lose interest of these marginal activities. Frazier believes that these activities serve as a getaway for us to relax and not worry about anything. With our comfort zone, we can escape

They just seem to have valuable fun. Our minds are empty not needing to worry about anything; we are nurtured from the very beginning, by our parents teaching us good from bad learning how to speak in complete sentences or the very least say mom or dad. We have no job; everything is taken care of, decisions are already made for us, so what is a good way to actually use our time since we have not been given any responsibilities? That is when marginal activities come into play and create a solution by making us more productive than just being couch potatoes and wasting our time on social media, or simply doing …show more content…

We all know those people that can not peel themselves from their technology, whether it’s the CEO of a major business or a teenage girl, they walk with their faces lit with the screaming brightness of a phone. In modern society, if a person is found on social media it is considered cool, while reading is not. Recent society has become caught up in the latest movies, fashion trends, and social media. Ray Bradbury wrote of this happening all the way back in the 1950s! He wrote science fiction where humans have become obsessed with technology, nowadays, that is called reality.…

In light of his personal experience, Bob Hebert explains in his article the negative effects of overusing technology. In fact, the necessity of always doing more than one task at the same time - especially when it comes to electronic communication – let us forget the meaning we find in life. The solution proposed by the author to overcome and control this addiction, is to take a break and stop being distracted by material goods, to be able to discover our deepest needs by listening to our inner silence.…

The Artificial Human There is a situation that most humans have encountered. People can be in public hoping and praying for a text or a notification on social media, but cringe at the idea of another person sitting next to them on public transportation and possibly striking a conversation. This is an example of the five-foot circumference that most Americans have created that they like to call “personal space”. There once was a time when people craved social interactions and face-to-face communication.…

In “The World Is All That Is The Case” by Lee Seigel, he argues that although the internet and technologies can have great benefits, its downside cannot be denied. The downside of the internet is that it blurs the line between a fantasy world and real life. The internet is encouraging people to create independent worlds for each other that make it even harder to simply be human and be aware of the world. Technologies are assimilating human existence to an economic model which has nothing to do with being human. It does not include human needs, desires, and experiences.…

First, we should take the fact that using too much technology affects the way we comprehend and behave. In the article “Attached to Technology and Paying a Price” by Matt Richtel it gives several scientifically proven facts that using technology to much may affect the way we understand. There is so much in the current world that takes away from the way things used to be. Something as gigantic as the innovation of the cellular phone, or something as little as advertisements in the trays at a security checkpoint in the airport, both take away from the possibility of having a moment of solitude in life. Surfing the internet one can find a multitude of different articles chastising the progression of technology, and how it negatively affects society, but one will not find any legitimate research to back up such claims. Two articles, “Stop Googling, Let’s Talk,” and “The Cost of Paying Attention” follow the same form containing large amounts of anecdotal information while lacking genuine evidence. Both rely heavily on logos…

The passages I have just read are about children and how people believe their time is better spent. One is for creative play time and the other is more set towards orginized activities. I believe there should be a mix between the two, not just one in particular; but we'll get to that later in my essay. In the passage "Helping Children Play Creatively" it points out that in todays society children's time is over filled with structured activity. While sports, clubs, and music are all great activities, it does not give the child time to be as creative.…

Those subtle over exaggerations plant the seed, in the reader’s head, that technology is controlling lives of many Americans. Cyberpunk There is much controversy on the topic of whether or not technology hinders today’s generation and the influences it has on our future. Cyberpunk is a subgenre of science fiction in a future setting, prominent for its focus on "high tech and low life". Generally centered on a conflict among artificial intelligences or a mega corporation, cyberpunk does a great job of taking the technology resources we have now and heightening them but not too much to where it doesn’t seem tangible. The cyberpunk genre also sheds a light on this dependency we as humans have on our personal gadgets. We invest so much of our time and money trying to keep up with the “next big thing” and staying relevant that we become consumed by the very thing that…
