Iago hides his intention behind his language, loyalty, and humor. He uses vague and unclear language, filled with flattery and lies to manipulate Othello into doing what he desires. He confesses to Roderigo that “in following [Othello], [he] [follows] but [himself]” (I.I.60); that he merely pretends to be loyal in order to take advantage of Othello’s weakness. Despite admitting such thing, Roderigo continues to put his trust in him.…

In 1603, William Shakespeare wrote a tragedy called Othello about a Spanish moor that ultimately fell victim to his own skepticism and emotions and murders his wife due to the machinations of Iago. Iago is the most interesting character in this Shakespearean play and actually has more speaking parts than even Othello himself. A man that can even convince his own wife to help with his masterfully manipulated puppetry of Othello, Desdemona, Rodrigo, Cassio, and Emilia is an exquisite character. This villain seems to have no real motive for his actions, but the enjoyment of the trouble he causes and the fact that Othello passed him over for his lieutenant. (Although, Iago seems to quite passionately want Othello’s affections whether as a friend…

William Shakespeare’s Othello becomes a tragedy when Othello places all of his trust in his friend, Iago, who’s master plan is to destroy Othello and Othello’s lieutenant, Cassio. Iago, the manipulative villain, holds very little trust in his friends/colleagues, for he believes others act deceptively, much like Iago himself. Iago is the least trustworthy, manipulating those around him in order to obtain what he wants; in this case, he wants Cassio’s position as lieutenant. Iago, convinced that people act with ill intentions, does not trust others. Iago’s distrust in others proves that one’s own ability to trust reflects deceptiveness and trustworthiness in him/herself.…

This shows that even though Iago has already done so much, he can never be satisfied with other people 's misery and is always craving more. He completely destroys Othello’s character because he relishes in being evil and does not care how many people he harms in the process due to his selfish behaviour. Iago is also very good at recognising when people can be beneficial to him and how he can use them for his own advantage. When Iago tries to explain to Roderigo why he must pretend to follow Othello, Roderigo doesn’t really understand. Iago always acts as Othello support and abuse him with his honesty words. As his trusty nature, Othello never doubts about Iago's loyalty since he was so helpful and truthful. Not just him but everybody in the play view Iago as an honest man. As such, this gives Iago the opportunity to strike lies, since everything he said was believed to be the truth, Iago said, "Make the Moor thank me, love me, and reward me for making him egregiously an ass and practicing upon his peace and quiet even to madness." (II.1.330-334) This quote shows that Iago uses his honest side as a net for Othello's trust and he will use that trust against Othello himself as revenge on his position and rumors about Othello sleeps with his wife.…
