The concert I decided to attend was on Thursday, March 31st, at 8pm in Kemp Recital Hall. The concert consisted of ISU Jazz Combos. Speficaly, there were two different combos, the Marko Combo and the Nolan Combo. Within the Marko Combo, the songs of Stablemates by Benny Golson, Desfinado by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Everybody wants to be a Cat by Robert and Richard Sherman, Ballade de Papillon by Jeff Arbisi, and One for Trane by Mickey Bass were played. The Marko Combo consisted of Kevin Buck and Jeff Arbisi on saxophone, Catherine Jun on Piano, Sam Tedeschi on Bass, and Austin Gannon on drums. During the Nolan Combo, the songs of Joshua by Victor Feldman, Parisian Thoroughfare by Bud Powell, ‘Round Midnight by Thelonious Monk, I’m Not So Sure by Cedar Walton, and The Intrepid Fox by Freddie Hubbard were played. I think that this song was very different from the songs we listened to in class, which was kind of neat. There wasn’t a clear rhythm of sorts to this song. I felt like a lot of different things were going on and each instrument had their own parts going on. However, it all flowed together really well. The saxophone(s) and piano played most of the choruses, and each had their own little part of a solo. I believe this song would fall into the category of cool jazz. I thought this was a really neat way to start out a concert, especially for someone who had never attended a jazz concert before.

The second song which was played also caught my attention was Desafinado. This song I believe fell into the category of cool jazz. it seemed like a song almost that you would hear at a coffee shop, very peaceful song. I could definetlly see myself listening to this song while studying or relaxing. Out of all the songs played at the concert, this song was the easiest for me to spot the style of the piece. The saxophone held the chorus and was the most prominent instrument in this

Jazz History Concert Report II For my final concert writing critique, I decided to attend the live Ball State Student Jazz Combos on Tuesday, November 8; this event took place in Choral Hall inside of the university’s Music Instruction Building. The wooden hall was smaller than I thought it would have been, but it gave the concert setting a more intimate feel. There were three groups presenting that day, each under a different director. Because each group did not have a specific name, I had to label them based on the order in which they performed.…

Finally, I can say that experiencing this type of Jazz concert, where it is more of a casual, lounge atmosphere was very interesting due to the fact that the first Jazz concert I attended was in a more professional setting. It was a lot more obvious to me how Jazz does live in the moment, since the band actually did a whole improvised piece and was randomly deciding what they were going to play next. The connection between the band members was also very evident, they had a lot of eye contact and head signals. Last but not least, I am excited about the fact that this jazz session incorporated certain elements of Jazz that we have recently covered in class. For example, the train influence on music pieces.…

For this first discussion I have chosen "Stravinsky: The firebird, Finale" and "Duke Ellington: The "C" Jam Blue". These two differed in a variety of things. For "Stravinsky: The firebird, Finale" I felt like it was more like orchestra music while "The "C" Jam blue" was more like jazz. I felt like the pitch for " The Firebird Finale" was more high than "The C Jam". Also the dynamics for " The Firebird Finale" fluctuated a lot in tone.…

On May 10th, I had the opportunity to the “The Stony Brook Roots Ensemble. This was my first experience witnessing traditional American music played live. The venue and the ambiance were completely different from my time at the orchestra at the Staller Center. The performance took place in the Wang Center Chapel, which had surprisingly great acoustics than expected. At the orchestra there was very strict etiquette when in attendance, where one must be incredibly quiet in order to not disturb anyone else.…

Overall the concert was amazing. I sometimes go to orchestrated concerts and the performance that I have seen specifically the NYU Symphony and the performances that these students did, was overall really great and flawless. My favorite piece by far and not because I’m instrument bias was, “The Joyful Escape”. The mini solo the clarinetist had was amazing and she didn’t mess up at that part at all. From “Two Chorales” to “Iona Alma mater” that clarinet played as smooth as it can ever be.…

The second Musician I want to talk about would be Michael Lington during the live Jazz Concert. Michael Lington is the Sax player. He is a Danish- American contemporary Saxophonist , producer, songwriter, recording artist and a purveyor of soul and contemporary Jazz. I personally love the way how the concert went, even though I’m not in the actual performance, but I still felt how excited the audiences was during the concert. During the Concert the music was played very soft and it did not have anything like the big band or African influence kind of characteristics.…

The jazz ensemble was set up in straight rows, which was different from the classical ensemble. From what I could tell the performers seemed excited to start playing, they were probably as excited as myself, if not more, to be able to play alongside Stuart Mack. Stuart is a very talented musician both from what I read in the program and from seeing him perform throughout the concert. From the audience clapping and being able to feel more relaxed during the performances to actually enjoying the solos…

Moreover, since it was a solo performance, there was no communication among performers. Even though I could not see the performer because he was hide behind the organ, I could feel that I was putting a lot of energy in this piece to make it dramtic. Just by the way he would hit the peddles it resound in the Hall. The musical composition I liked the least was Prélude et fugue en mi mineur composed by Johann Sebastian Bach.…
