What is ISIS? ISIS is an acronym that stands for the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" . Its recent origins must be briefly explained by political unrest in Afghanistan and Iraq that started in the 1980's. The Soviet Union invades and occupies Afghanistan 1979. Muslim Afghan warriors called "mujahideen" rebels are the fighting Soviet Union incursion from 1979-1989. The United States was openly supporting and sponsoring these anti communist rebels. This is the rise and infancy of Osama bin laden , a Saudi, who becomes a freedom fighter and hero. Rebel fighters from Afghanistan are in a military lull after the defeat of the Soviets. The "Taliban" Afghani Muslim fundamentalist slowly take over the tribal regions of Afghanistan and institute …show more content…
Currently ISIS is stationed in Iraq and Syria.(The Independent. Independent Digital News and Media) They do not have political control over many of these areas that they reside, nor do they have any permanent settlement in most of these territories. However; ISIS wants to take over most countries in the middle east with a majority population, create a political rule over that region and eventually link with the other countries they have control over. Creating one massive Islamic Caliphate. Once completed , Isis’ objective would be to challenge their enemies of the past, including most of the western world. With the US regularly being referred to as “World police” even movies spoof the American involvement in foreign affairs. It is hard for the country to establish their position on many world issues. Regarding ISIS the United States have taken a somewhat controversial stance. The extent of US involvement is yet to include putting boots on the ground in either Iraq or Syria, instead giving military support to the countries being directly affected by ISIS. The more progressive option the US has chosen is training the Iraqi army, Kurdish forces and groups of Syrian rebels. The US military has supported vulnerable regions through the use of airstrikes, aimed at weakening the ISIS forces. These airstrikes have been deemed controversial due to the thousands of resulting civilian casualties. Despite the controversy surrounding the Americans involvement, much of the world hopes these tactics are able to dismantle the Islamic state and the condition of unrest in the middle east.
