ISIS Synthesis Essay

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, commonly known as ISIS, was born from an Al-Qaeda faction under the leadership of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Under his leadership ISIS has grown from relative obscurity to a global threat. Using military expertise, torture and psychological warfare ISIS has been able to take control of large swaths of land in Iraq and Syria. ISIS has captured prisoners and through a series of videos they have threatened America and Britain. The latest of these videos featured British prisoner John Cantlie speaking on behalf of ISIS. Two news organizations that covered this story were the New York Times and Vice News. These organization have covered the Cantlie videos as well as the ISIS situation more generally. I reviewed two other compositions to compare and contrast them to the earlier editorials. One was from the New York Times, titled “In New Front against Islamic State, Dictionary Becomes a Weapon,” and again the New York Times showed its strength at showing the ISIS situations influence on a global scale, while incorporating first-hand and professional accounts. The New York Times seems very consistent with their writing and provision of complete information just as the first article discussed. The other is from Vice News labeled “Turkey Votes on New Powers to Fight Islamic State.” This composition follows in the footsteps of the New York Times, concentrating on international affairs and even quoting an outside source, the Turkish Prime Minister. Contrasting Vice’s last article by Hannah Strange, this later news analysis shows much more comprehension on the events happening in Turkey to legalize military action against ISIS. The Vice News article once again does not go in to as much detail as the New York Times, but certainly showed improvement from the earlier
