When US troops moved out of Iraq, there was a power vacuum. There was a dissolved Iraqi army. ISIS is the descendent of Al Qaeda. It’s a “jihadist” extremist militant group trying to create an Islamic state. It is comprised of Sunni Arabs from Iraq and Syria. ISIS, which stands for Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, has a goal to create an Islamic empire and fight the United States. When the group changed its focus to Syria it rebranded itself ISIS. They post a lot of videos, most notably their speeches and there have been videos showing them with hostages and of beheading and torture ISIS releases videos showing horrible treatment of citizens, being tortured based on religion or ethnicity. Fernandez writing for a non-profit about the Middle East, mentions one video that talks about an old man’s sacrifice that he and his sons made for Jihad. This man then goes on to describe Jihad as individual duty for all Muslims (Fernandez). They call out that there is a plot to kill Sunni Muslims. It is a “perfect frame for ISIS’s claim” to be the defender of Sunni Arab Muslims (Fernandez). Much of the social media movement focuses on showing ISIS as a goodwill organization. Many Twitter feeds maintained by ISIS often produce images of militants connecting with children, handing out food, and doing good for the community (Combating Hate). A lot of the propaganda focuses on the ISIS’s work to establish a model Islamic state.
The Islamic State’s media department is good at what they do and they produce material that its supporters can use to attract recruits, raise money and endorse the image of the state (Barrett).
