IPC Reflection Paper Every week, I would evaluate my experiences and transfer them into my Interpersonal Communication Journal. Each entry made me analyze each conversation I had with the people that are in my life. As I reflected on all my past journal entries, I have noticed some patterns going on. The major pattern that I have noticed was that I did my journals in the nighttime which makes me an owl according to the physiological traits. The many other patterns consisted of facework, fellowship face, unconditional positive regard, open-mindedness, and listening to show support. Alongside with these patterns, came the strengths and weaknesses in my communication with others. Through these strengths and weaknesses, I came up with an improvement …show more content…
The strengths that I have found are: listening to show support, mutual equality and genuineness. A major strength that I have in many of my communication with my relationships are that I am the one listening. My journals have shown that I am a good listener and that I follow in to the listening to show support category. When listening to support, I tend to listen to everything the person is directing at me and evaluating it until I come up with helpful advice for them. Just listening to them the speaker can make them feel so much better. Mutual equality is another strength of mine and that is where I do not judge people based on race, gender or religion. I regard people as my equals and I respect their beliefs. A final strength of mine that is presented in my journal entries is genuineness. What it means to be genuine is that the act of being direct, honest, and straightforward regarding what people believe and think. In many of my communications, I like to be genuine because I like to stay true to myself and what I believe …show more content…
I now started to use critical thinking which helps me evaluate a message is being presented to me in many of my communications. I also have been using image management that is quite helpful in any group presentations that I did and will do in the future. In my communications, I also tried to use parallelism. By using this strategy, I have exaggerated phrases and it created an impact. In the Strengths Finder survey, my five greatest strengths are adaptability, harmony, responsibility, consistency and an includer (Gallup, 2010). I realized that I had some of those strengths but some of those are new to me. The strength that has always stood out to me that I knew about was responsibility. The other four, I guess I have developed along the way. As I sit and think about my results of my test.…

After reading a few chapters of Strengths Quest, I was instructed to participate in the Strengths Finder assessment (Anderson, Clifton, & Schreiner, 2006). This 30 minute assessment was an interesting tool that pointed out my greatest strengths. It also provided a detailed description of what having those strengths mean and examples of how they are prominent in a person 's life. After taking the StrengthsFinder survey, I discovered that my five dominant strengths are empathy, harmony, consistency, relator, and restorative.…

Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue” was interesting as it was the first time I really had to analyze my communication forms. I communicate differently when I speak because I’m introverted, yet when writing I’m solo and have time to collect and express my thoughts. I realized I really was the “listener”, whereas my father was the Big “Talker”. Recently I told my fiancé that communication was overrated since she complained about how difficult it was for her to figure me out as I didn’t explain in more depth during conversation.…

I am fairly good at meeting new people, my peer students, because I believe I can be outgoing, friendly and easy to talk to. I also believe another strength was being involved within campus. I am the president of emotion, member of CAC, and mentor in Moving Forward Together. When my peer students had questions about joining clubs I could offer them my experiences in these different clubs or provide them with someone that was in a club they were interested. Another example of a strength is knowing where places are.…

In contrast to my weaknesses and fears of writing, I have always had a creative imagination fueled by my love of reading. Raising children and helping them with their home work has given me some; ever so minimal and scarce, confidence in my abilities. Using stories to entertain my children, and now my grandchildren has continuously been a favorite pastime for them as well as myself. So my greatest strength would have to be listed as experience, practice and a true love of the written word.…

“Communication with others” sounds so simple. Unfortunately, too often when we try to communicate we get lost in translation. We say one thing, but our interlocutor hears something else what can cause misunderstandings, and conflicts. Whether we are trying to improve communication with our close people, we can improve the communication skills that enable us to effectively connect with others, understand better and listen carefully.…

The StrengthFinder survey advised that my five strengths are harmony, positivity, developer, woo, and relator. Initially I was unaware of the definitions of some of these strengths. Upon describing the definition of those strengths provided by StrengthFinder, I determined that these strengths were extremely accurate. Harmony is described as a person who looks to avoid conflict, and tries their best to become acquainted with others (Clifton 2006). My law enforcement occupation requires me to work with different co-workers and different citizens daily.…

The most memorable nonverbal conversation I had was when my grandma passed away. I noticed that both my parents were sad, especially my dad. He wasn’t crying like everybody else, but I could notice there were tears in his eyes. I understood that he was having a tough time and that I should be helping with the funeral instead of crying. By nonverbal communication, I was able to understand my father’s feeling without he told me about it.…
