For many years I floundered as to what career I should pursue. The aspirations of becoming a marine biologist or an English teacher that I had held previously were no longer in line with my interests or desires. I wanted to write and work with books. One night I had the privilege of speaking with the owner of a local publishing company who was in need of an intern editor. That opportunity gave me a passion for helping authors achieve their dreams of publication. A large part of furthering my career in copy editing is to complete college. My experience as a copy editor will facilitate my academic work and ensure the completion of my goal to earn a communications degree at Colorado Christian University.

In the later half of that year, I found that I had a knack for editing, which was unusual due to the fact that I didn’t really have a knack for anything. Undeniably, editing was a test of patience, and with my diligence, it was one I was able to pass with flying colors. I enjoyed (and still enjoy) editing because it was the process of turning a vision into a reality; a process that I could see myself doing for countless years to…

Being enrolled in community college classes during high school allowed me to develop some of the critical writing skills that were essential for me to succeed at the university level. I soon began to realize and understand that writing is different for everyone, and that the writing processes and techniques that were designed and tailored for students in high school are largely irrelevant and unsubstantial. I also came to the realization that a writer must discover for themselves what works for them and what does not. The introductory writing class that I took at my community college gave me a better understanding of what was expected of me at the high school level versus the college level. Today, I apply the knowledge I gained from the class to my university level…

Throughout my life, I have had many different ideas of what career I should aim to have when I finish my education and become an independent. In early elementary school, I remember wanting to be an artist “when I grew up,” and for all of middle school, I was almost obsessed with the idea of owning my own bakery and decorating cakes when I graduated from school. It wasn’t really until high school until I gave any serious thought to what type of career I should stride towards, or any serious thought to what meaning I wanted my life to have. In high school, I took many interesting and challenging classes, got to know a lot of very good teachers, and got involved in a multitude of diverse extracurricular activities.…
