Sustainability Of Life

Sustainability Earth is a small fraction of the never ending universe, however it is our only way of life and needs to be taken care of. Life as we know it depends on one speck in the universe and that speck can only hold so much. Many people do not think about the actions made and what effects they have on the Earth but it needs to start being a priority. Considering the fact that there is only one planet that has the ability to keep us alive, it is the job of humans to make sure Earth lasts as long as possible and is not used up. As of today, there are over seven billion people and it is estimated that Earth can only handle up to nine or ten billion (Wolchover). Earth is not a renewable resource and there is not another planet able to sustain …show more content…
Mercury is the most potent neurotoxin known to man. Meaning, there are no other known chemicals which affect your brain as drastically. And worse, mercury doesn 't break down in the body, or in the environment. It just keeps accumulating (Kroll). So not only is mercury bad for people and their health, but there is no way to get rid of it. When choosing a light bulb that is going to be all over a house, I would prefer one not streaming out with mercury. Compact fluorescent lamps will help people health wise and help the Earth by not letting out so much mercury, a greenhouse gas which increases global warming. More than 325,000 babies born each year are affected by mercury poisoning (Kroll); cutting back mercury exposure even by a little bit by switching to CFLs could help out. Of course it would take many people performing the switch before any drastic changes occur, however it is an easy step to take to help the Earth and the people living on …show more content…
The drawbacks include that the light bulb does not give off its maximum light until it is on for about two or three minutes. That can be overcome by turning the light on in the room a couple of minutes before someone needs to go in there. Another drawback was it initially costs more. But the fact is that it ends up saving you money in the long run. The bulb does cost more up front but it will last longer and save people money by not making the house warmer and causing the air conditioning to turn on and they produce more light at lower wattages. The final drawback is that the CFL light bulbs cannot be used with light dimmers. There is no way to get around that one but considering all of the good these light bulbs do, it is easy to overlook one small flaw. These minor negative side effects are easy to look past and in the end do not really matter. Overall CFLs will do more help than harm for people and the Earth; it just takes the simple step of changing the light

Over the past century we have seen not only our population skyrocket, but also our technological capacity increase exponentially. My worldview, primarily eco-centric, is focused on the incredible potential of technology to create sustainable harmony between humanity and the earth. We have gotten to a point in our evolution where it will be impossible to revert to our pre-industrial state. Our resources are limited and should not be wasted, this traces back to the fundamental property of the universe: energy and matter cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be converted between forms. So much matter is wasted and converted into a state in which it is impossible to recover it, and instead of draining the earth we should be focusing on developing inexhaustible…

Fracking refers to the process of injecting liquids under high pressure into subterranean rocks to force open cracks from which to extract oil or gas. So it’s basically a substance injected into a rock that cracks the rock open and lets out oil and gasses. I think this is a good thing to do because it’s lowering the price as a whole. Plus we don’t have to worry about as much pollution because we won’t have to use coal. But, others don’t think the same because the rocks are natural and they don’t think they should be messed with.…

Critical Response: Four Challenges of Sustainability In "Four Challenges of Sustainability" (2003), David Orr argues that the world is becoming more difficult to sustain it due to potential barriers . Initially, he sends his readers into a rather list of various issues that he believes the world can no longer sustain. He mentions that militarization as one issue while emphasizing his belief that sooner or later it will lead to 'Armageddon' (final battle between good and evil). Furthermore, he identifies world poverty, a growing population, unrestrained development, a divided world, an ever increasingly complex world that is overwhelming our capacity to manage, and a world that is spiritually impoverished as all being…

As Americans continue to live prosperous lives, we diminish our natural recourses and environment around us. We will not understand the importance of our Earth until it’s too late. As an American citizen, I can say myself that I am very stubborn when it comes to change. Although I believe if we were more aware of the dire consequences we would alter our lifestyle; starting with the little things for example, turning the faucet off while brushing our teeth, recycling more often, and picking up trash we find on the ground. As days pass by we continue to ignore the warnings from our scientists and the signs around us.…

Social sustainability has gained increased recognition for being key aspects of the sustainability debate in recent years. Previously, the concepts of environmental and economic sustainability were dominant in the social sustainability debate and it wasn’t until the 1990s that social issues of society were added into the subject of sustainability (Drexhage and Murphy, 2010). Social sustainability is defined by “development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” (World Commission on Environment and Development,2009:40.) A combination of the increasing population, rising levels of consumption and a limited amount of resources creates issues in the ability to meet the…

They may be more sustainable, but they could become expensive to buy, but they last longer the the average incandescent light bulb, so they’d be worth it in the end. Also, for trying to help conserve the amount of water you use while you shower may become hard for some people. For people with longer hair, it may take longer for them to shower than those with shorter hair, because it simply takes them longer to wash their hair. Another reason it may be hard to conserve water while showering, is that form of habit that you have already established. As it is said, it is hard to break habits, especially bad ones, but if you can achieve the new shower time for nearly six week, it should break that habit.…
