The American Association for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities recently endorsed the use of the general term intellectual disabilities in place of the previous term mental retardation. Explain the rationale for this name change.
Advocates for individuals with intellectual disability have rightfully asserted that the term “mental retardation” has negative connotations, has become offensive to many people, and often results in misunderstandings about the nature of the disorder and those who have it.

a. Employment - taking into account the child’s strengths, preferences, and interests; utilizing a real-life experience and opportunities for work through situated education; and the development of student-focused strategies
