SIU Head Start The Southern Illinois Head Start program is funded through a federal grant which serves income eligible children from three to five years of age. My main goal for choosing SIU Head Start for my practicum was to get experience with small children in a classroom setting. My other goal was to understand how nutrition is involved with the SIU Head Start program. The idea of having direct teaching experience with small children compelled me to choose SIU Head Start for my practicum.…

FATEMEH MASTERI 11.09.2016 UNIT 4 4.2.3 Assess how own attitudes, values and behaviour could impact on work with children. I always thought that working with children and being in their world is easy but when I started my TA course and my placement in a primary school I noticed that is not much easy. My placement is in Upper Horfield Primary School and in the first week of my training I was looking for any other staff from different countries but I couldn’t find any except one lady who was from Africa and woks in the kitchen. I asked from myself this country is multi cultural, so why isn’t there any foreigner?…
1)How does the program philosophy address cultural awareness and diversity? Describe the basic elements of this philosophy. My students are young so they are naturally curious about the people around them. The students attempt to formulate a sense of their own identity by defining what makes them different from everyone else. Students usually ask questions on characteristics they see such as skin color or hair.…
As a Family Advocate, I work with families and children from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. It is important to focus on building relationships of mutual trust, confidence, and respect for diverse families. After completing the observations, the anti-bias curriculum is a must to reflect the culture and background of the families and children in the program. Many families I work with are low income. My goal is to create an environment where children and families from different backgrounds can feel comfortable and belonging.…

In recent years, the student demographic in the United States has changed dramatically. American middle schools are becoming more diverse in their student population. Many of the new student body come from minority groups that include African-American and Latino students. Recent research has shown that these minority groups of students come to school at a disadvantage due to their family educational background, and poverty. The purpose of this literature review is to examine how participation in after-school programs help close the academic gap in African American and Latino middle school students and how after school programs can be enhance to assure that the academic gap among minority groups can be shorten.…
While analyzing the required text for this week there were five ethical categories that reoccurred through each document: responsibilities to parents, collaboration, community, personal development, and students. In addition, there are other categories, but these are the most significant to me. Special education teachers have a responsibility to parents: • Use culturally appropriate communication with parents and families that is respectful and accurately understood (CEC, 2010). • Actively seek and use the knowledge of parents and individuals with exceptionalities when planning, conduction, and evaluating special education services and empower them as partners in the education process (CEC, 2010). • Respect the private nature of the special…
What stood out to me from this week’s continent material are the two movies, “A Classroom Dived” and “Why I Love a Country That Once Betrayed Me.” These movies stick out for the reasons that every minorities group has contributed and sacrifice for the United States of America, to become “free.” Yet, they are all being treated as second-class citizens-denied a “personal freedom”, one way or another. In addition, the “cartoon page” Post -racial America? sums it all issues up, I suppose. The movie “Why I Love a Country That Once Betrayed Me” remains me of the Tuskegee Airmen.…

For culture to be referenced during the meeting is for the team to research prior to the meeting the student’s family background. The team could incorporate interests of the student within the IEP meeting based of the student’s culture and background. Also, it would be important to know the students culture because some cultures do not recognize kids with disabilities. This would be important to know how to communicate with the parents during the meeting without offending their culture or background.…
Generally, if someone is different than us we do not take the time to take a closer look at that person to get to know him or her. We can become afraid of others and thus do not become unified as a community of learners. This can happen with those who look different, act different, or are differently abled. Taking the time to get to know about each student and their cultural background, even if it is only a little different from a peer’s own culture, will help a teacher and other students learn about the unknown and also identify with other students through likenesses and differences. This includes learning about each student’s family and learning about places that live differently from us.…

First of all, I am in a preschool class of fourteen students. The teacher, is well organized and always has a set schedule. He also does a great job promoting diversity as well as helping the children learn. My main focus in this observation was the eight aspects of diversity.…
