ICD-10-CM Compliance Report

After exploring the National Center for Health Statistics website, I discovered that the NCHS has been involved in the development of the ICD-10-CM codes by being the Federal agency responsible for use of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th revision. Which became effective as of October 1, 2015, in replacement of the ICD-9-CM. although the NCHS is involved in the development of the ICD-10-CM the copyright belongs to the World Health Organization (WHO), who owns and publishes the calcification. In order for the WHO to authorize the development of an adoption of the ICD-10, all the modifications must be in accordance with their conventions. Additionally, an evaluation by a Technical Advisory Panel and extensive additional consultation with physician groups, clinical coders, and others to assure clinical accuracy and utility. As mentioned this authorization is for use in the United States for U.S, government purposes. Some of the improvements are: greater specificity in code assignment, incorporation of common 4th and 5th digit subclassification, laterality, the addition of sixth and seventh characters, the creation of combination diagnosis/symptom codes to reduce the number of codes needed to fully describe a condition, expanded injury codes and the addition of information relevant to ambulatory and managed care encounters. All the feedback that was received was reviewed by the American Hospital Association and the American Health Information Management Association. After they reviewed the data collected they made some adjustments and additional modifications were made based on the established comments and suggestions. All this happened over a long period of time since over a decade to ensure that it was beneficial to the health
