IBD is an umbrella term consisting of two main diseases: UC and Crohn’s disease. Both of these are unpredictable, relapsing and remitting chronic conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract.1,2 They have overlapping features and some distinct features that differ with one another.1,3 I would be focusing more about UC in this case discussion which was the diagnosis for this patient. The terms IBD and UC would be interchangeable throughout this case discussion.
Epidemiology
The incidence and prevalence of IBD are increasing with time with an estimation of 0.5% of Northern Europe population affected by it.4 In the UK, approximate 240,000 people are affected with IBD.4,5
Factors which may have contributed to the diagnosis
Studies have highlighted and recognised the importance of the interplay between genetic, environmental, behavioural and psychosocial factors that can contribute the development of IBD.6,7 These will be reviewed here.

NOD2 gene variants) has shown to have a role in contributing the development of IBD which is thought to have a link in the dysregulation of the body immune system that may affect the normal flora.1,6,7 This theory is believed that certain environmental and behavioural factors can trigger this dysregulation of the immune system and consequently leading to a chronic inflammation of the gut.6,7 However, it is important to note that genetics alone is not solely responsible in the aetiology of IBD, thus knowledge of its interaction with other various factors is key to further understand this
