Personal Essay: A Short Story

I’ve never been afraid of flying. My dad used to watch shows about planes that fell out of the sky but it never fazed me. My first time in a plane was when I was just 3 months old and before you ask, no, I wasn’t one of those annoying kids that screamed from takeoff to landing – annoying the living crap out of people. According to my mom I was quite well behaved during travel. Being high up in the sky and traveling to far off places was pretty much second nature to me up until I was about three or four years old. Though I have no memory of this, I’m told that I was a very shy and quiet kid who was very well behaved, even at 30,000 feet above the ground. Despite being a shy kid, I was always up for a new adventure in a new place. Whether I was in a stroller, strapped to my mother in what I can only describe as a “baby holster”, or (when I was a bit older) walking beside my parents, I was always looking for a new thing to do. I was curious and always wanted to explore. I walked around Bangkok, strolled around Alberta, and repeatedly ran at a cheetah’s speed from one end of the Karachi airport to the other while my uncle was following right behind me (and getting quite winded I’m told) to make sure I wasn’t getting into …show more content…
My grandparents and uncle weren’t there waiting for me when I got home (though at least one of my parents were always there), my lunch never got made fun of again (yay), there was no nap time at my new school (which was agony because I was and still am, a person who needs her sleep), and I didn’t know anybody – I was in a foreign land. I remember having fun playing with toys, drawing pictures of my family and making a couple friends but there was also a significant amount of work to do. I remember being jealous that the junior kindergarteners got to trace their letters while we had to write them ourselves. I never noticed any difference between me and everybody else until the next

On 06/01/2018 at approximately 1654 hrs. , I responded to the 100 blk of S Main St in reference to a drunk male without a shirt on harassing people walking while being aggressive. The caller advised the male also cornered two young women of the street and was harassing people in their vehicles. I made contact with the male without a shirt on and identified him as Boyd Douglas Wagner, W/M, DOB 06/23/1975. Wagner had a strong odor of intoxicants coming from his person.…

I’ve never been to a college football game before, nor do I know the slightest bit about it. But I figured it would be just like going to a high school home coming game but with more people. I had been waiting for this day for weeks. Waking up from my deep sleep to my nerve-racking alarm telling me its time to wake up, I stretched my 5’1 body out of bed, wrapping my toes in the curls of my crème colored carpet. I could smell the morning dew as I woke.…

The exact moment I sat down in the car his chiseled jawline tightened, and his brown eyes flashed heat waves at me. I could see his white knuckles as he held onto the steering wheel. I had a lump in my throat that felt like I swallowed a golf ball. My hands were shaking and my eyes were blurry from holding back tears, but somehow I managed to get my seatbelt on while he put the car in drive. I really didn’t want to talk, but I felt like I had to say something so I asked “How was your day?”…

The road was curvy and smooth but, every mile, every second felt like an eternity. The smell of grass filled my nose. I was in a basketball shirt and shoes with khakis going to say a good-bye. My breaths got quicker and shakier, my body turned ice cold and tingly. The car turned into the driveway of a large brick building—my eyesight went dizzy, no more feeling in my legs, I felt like my stomach was in my throat.…

I was driving to my friends house in New Hampshire on a freezing December night. I was really late because I had hit traffic on the way up, but I was getting close now. I had the music up loud and was drinking a coffee so there was no chance of me getting tired and missing a turn or anything. After 2 hours in the car I was so hungry so I went to get my chips out of my bag in the passenger seat then I remember I put them in the back seat.…

A few years ago it was not hard for me to imagine a life where I could not rely on myself to get where I needed to go. Suppose it was imperative that an individual get to the bank to cash their paycheck, or trying to get to a friend's house but with no one to drive you there. Recalling my younger years it was my belief that my sixteenth birthday would be one of the greatest days of my life. Waking up before the sun had risen was a rarity for my in that particular time, but I had no problems doing it on that glorious morning. I had been learning to drive for over six months and was ready to start a new part of my life where mobility was a much less complicated problem.…

“ My day has been as slow and as bad as a turtle trying to run” I whispered to myself sitting in my HAP class with my head in my arms. After a bad long day of school, I decided to hang out with some friends, trying to find a way to procrastinate even longer to do all my homework. I asked a few of my close friends, Lily and Jackson, to hang out and maybe go get something to eat. After the loud bell rang to dismiss all the students to go home, I met up with my friends and we were on our way. We walked out the big doors and right as I walked out the cold harsh air hit my face.…

Louie Nel catches himself thinking too much about the assignment, putting unnecessary angles and curves on something basically straight-forward. Dammit—that 's unusual. He 's always been level-headed on the job, except maybe right at the very beginning, when he was wetting his feet. That short apprenticeship and then after Bloemfontein it got easier, like passing through a gateway into another universe.…
