Personal Narrative: My First Time In Programming

Great Essays
I will never forget the first time I started programming. I started with the hopes of creating a “Triple A” game title or a physics engine for a game. Oh how naïve I was, I thought I would be able to program anything. With the sights of programming in my eyes one night I found myself alone in my room. The room was dark, the screen was bright and filled with white and a blinking cursor. I stared at it as it daunted me until the void in my mind finally expanded with the question “What do I do now?” I thought I could start programming an entire physics engine by myself without any knowledge of the mathematics of physics, how physics engines work, the amount of time, work, and skilled mathematical wizards from MIT and the like would take to create one. Nor did I even know the basics of programming. This was the first brick wall that I had to get passed.
It was time for a plan. I

They were always simple games, where they just told us what we needed to do and the parameters of how it should look and then simply told us just to do it. That may be intimating to some people, but certainly not to me. I liked the fact that I was able to solve problems on my own in order to have a final program that functioned how it was supposed to and not have someone constantly down my neck feeding me useless jargon and ultimately leaving me with less time for problem solving. In my opinion, this was such a good learning technique because it forced you out on the field all alone with nothing but a rock and stick in your hand and told to build a castle. This method was far superior then just taking tests and doing homework, like the tests that I took on the course. They were a bit difficult sometimes but ultimately useless. The so called “test” did not test my ability to actually program and understand logic nor did it represent any understanding of the given

What defines me is how I respond to these challenges.…

As I mentioned in the previous assignment, I want to increase my baseline 500 steps each week so that by the end of the semester I am recording 10,000 steps which is in the active range. I will continue walking around the property at work and stepping in place whenever I possibly can. I will stick to walking to the mailbox which is two blocks from home as opposed to driving up to it on my way home. If I have days where I am tired I will just give myself another pep talk. I have a pretty good support system thus far so I will lean on them if pushing myself on my own does not cut it.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

During this semester I have learned multiple things in my class GSW 1110, I learned the skills to research, write, using correct grammar and syntax, as well as setting goals to improve my skills as a writer. Through class exercises and writing the different types of papers, I was able to learn those skills. Skills such as having better vocabulary by using a few new words. Another goal is having a better flow throughout the essay by not going into detail about information that does not need to go into depth. A few more goals are better planning of ways to set up an essay and having credible sources and more information about sources.…

The first time senior project was ever introduced to me was actually my freshmen year. At the time of course I did not really think much about it because I just knew it was so long away and I had so many other things to do in the meantime like junior internship and a numerous amount of classes in high school, as well as the college. Honestly I did not put a whole lot of thought into it until the summer before my senior just because I knew it was a while away.…

While I come from an agriculturally-focused family, my interests as a young boy were divided between aviation and computers. At the age of 13, I began to focus more on my digital hobbies after a neighbor offered to assist me in learning the art of programming. During the next few years, he mentored me in software development using primarily C# with the .NET Framework. In that time, I created a collection of small personal applications and games as I experimented with code and concepts. At age 17, I became interested in interacting with the physical world through the digital one with the use of microcontrollers.…

I remember when I was 5, the first time I went to a building daily for 8 hours. I sat down on the cold blue chair. In front of me was a bin of crayons, all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple. I remember sitting in the cold room and having the freedom to draw marks on my blank sheet of paper. The dye scratching against the table, colors spreading across the canvas like the sun, rising in the early morning.…

Another reason I chose computer science is because computers are shaping the direction our world takes and I want to play a part in that. The idea of writing a program that helps a physicist decode the secrets of the universe or a doctor discover a cure for a serious disease holds great appeal for me. Computer science is a continually growing field and with computers becoming involved in almost every aspect of our lives it should remain so for the foreseeable future. Thanks to computer chips imbedded in everything from basketballs and shoes to computer-controlled thermostats more and more computerized data is being produced daily and to manage the acquisition, storage and use of this data will require computer scientists [1]. While sending jobs overseas will slow some aspects of computer science-related job growth overall computer science jobs are expected to continue growth through 2020 [3], [4], [5].…
