Cinéastes Les Hommes Analysis

The film I watched was Cinéastes: Les hommes. The film premiered on September 29, 2015 in France. The film was the second part of Cinéastes that was dedicated to women directors. During the film a woman had interviewed French male filmmakers. She had asked them different questions about filmmaking relating to females and seeing if they believe that cinema have a gender. When they were first asked about the gender of images they all were caught off guard and surprised. They took a few minutes to gather their thoughts on how to answer the question. They all seemed to have different answers and viewpoints on gender roles and how important they are in filmmaking. The majority of them had expressed that female perspectives are very important when …show more content…
Not only was he good looking he had made a comment about how he acts with his daughters during a time when he is busy filming and I thought it was sweet. The other two interviewers where Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano because they seemed to be the most interesting and funny ones. This was my first time viewing a French film. My experience with viewing the film I found it to be fascinating to see different positions that each interviewer had. I also found the movie to be boring and very slow. I would not watch it again and I will not recommend it to anyone unless they are interested in a documentary. I chose to watch this film because it was free which I believed it is the reason why it was not that great. I feel that if I had paid for a movie the movie would have been more entertaining and better. The genre of movies I view are mostly chick flicks, thrillers, and action. I watch chick flicks because I feel that they bring out my soft side when it comes to tears or romance. I like thriller movies because they are suspenseful and have me hanging off the edge of my seat. I enjoy action movies because they keep me entertained and

Another example is a short film I first saw in my play analysis class. A slightly unconventional example I think, yet, I feel it goes with the argument that has been built. Salvador Dali in 1929 released a film called Un Chein Andalou, and the particular scene that I saw in class was of a man dissecting the iris of a young woman’s eye. The scene brings forward the idea that female sight is not central. Furthermore, it also reinforces the fact that men are not just the audience but also seem to have the controlling hand in running the show; everything from the writing to the directing.…

Laura Mulvey states in male controlled society “the pleasure in looking is split between the active-male and passive-female.” this is echoed in the dominant forms in film. Classic Hollywood narratives traditionally focus on a male protagonist with an assumed male viewer. Men are presented as controlling characters and treat women as docile objects of desire; this applies to both on screen and to viewers. Women are objectified in relation to the male gaze, showcasing women as an image and men as owner of what is to be viewed.…

For this paper I am going to be discussing gender in the institution of films. Specifically I am going to be discussing masculinity and femininity in coming of age films. I am going to discuss how gender is represented in coming of age films and what it means to “come of age “ in regards to both masculinity and femininity. Coming of age movies set an expectation for teens and young adults it lays out what they should fear and what they should thrive to be in order to transition to adulthood successfully. The media defines cultural and gender norms that are often very stereotypical ().…

The film I chose for my final research paper was Paris is Burning, because although we viewed 2 other films about gender roles, I believe it represented all of the gender roles found in society. Livingston was able to dive into the world of the New York City drag balls and give the viewers an insight to race, class, gender, and sexuality in America. She was able to depict this by conducting interviews with “legends” in the ball scene but also footage of ball competitions and the interaction of gay and transgender people in normal society. My thesis revolves around how Livingston showed that gender is a role performed by society not a reality. One of the main topics that represents the performance that is gender is the different categories in the balls.…

The Ballad of Little Jo was an irregular representation of women cross-dressing in films. Rather than supporting the idea of proving women to be as progressive as men, this piece gives a surprising twist to genuinely display a woman as a male. In pop culture films like Mulan (1998) and She’s the Man (2006), the female protagonist has a specific goal in mind—to prove herself or her cause as important. Furthermore, Josephine Monaghan has no piece to prove, only a goal to simply survive. Director Maggie Greenwald begins by depicting Josephine as the stereotypical representation of women—helpless and weak, but develops this character into a strong, working male called Jo.…

The language choice of the movie more funny then serious. This is a movie that make the audience laugh and have a great time. They also have a lot of music in this movie which makes the movie even more interesting. Most of this music was really good too. Without the music scenes this movie definitely won’t be as good because the music adds more sense of communication with the audience.…

As mentioned, Stuart Hall was a Jamaican born cultural theorist and sociologist who lived and worked in the United Kingdom that our decoding of media images are very much influenced by the guidance of “dominant” social ideologies. Throughout the research and studies i really came to realize how correct Mr Hall was on his idea on how he believes that videos are all encoded, keying on race, but also, gender and sexuality. Doing much research on the "Mammy" stereotype of black women and the "Greaser" stereotype of latino men i came to a conclusion on believing his views of masculinity and femininity. Throughout this paper i will talk more about the differences and describe the way the film subjects the main two topics and how it keys in on race, gender, and sexuality. Greasers, who were also known as, “Hood”,…

When I was a child, Disney Princesses like Belle and Cinderella were my idols. There was some kind of independence and strength found within the characters. However, in retrospect I cannot help but notice a male gaze that is ominous over both of these films. The female characters are presented in a way that fits the mold of stereotypes and in turn objectifies them as prizes to be won. Cinderella and Belle became no more than beautiful damsels in distress.…

Beyonce Knowles sparked controversy with the release of her self-titled album as it features a song that focuses on feminism, “***Flawless”. The song includes a section of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's TED Talk, “We Should All Be Feminists”, in which she talks about the differences in the social structure of a woman's and a man's life. While men are taught they can do or be anything, women must make choices in life “always keeping in mind that marriage is the most important”. Beyonce's mention of feminism throughout the album caused discussion around the issues of gender equality but unfortunately the topic is not treated as seriously as it used to be. While women have gained rights over the last century that has made them more equal to men, invisible restrains in both the workplace and in everyday life still limit women from reaching complete equality.…

The stories "An Adventure in Paris"(NASF. 493) by Guy De Maupassant and "Everyday Use"(NASF. 816) by Alice Walker showcase similar and different ways to present a story through point of view and characters. Both stories have characters that are functional and symbolic to the story. Each of these stories uses both a foil and utilitarian through one character, Dee and Jean Varin, that ultimately changes the protagonist for the better and allows them to see what they have. De Maupassant makes his story a mix of third-person story telling and first-person experience to expose the extremity of a woman's curiosity. Meanwhile, Walker only uses the first person narration, which gives us perspective into the protagonist’s mind.…

Gender and representation In Marleen Gorris’s ‘A Question of Silence’ During the mid 1970s and into the early 1980’s, feminists critiqued ideologies and the system of beliefs in the patriarchal society. Feminist filmmaking became key to portraying fairer representations of women in film denied to them in Early Hollywood, whilst also using experimental techniques to give authorial voice to women filmmakers. Marleen Gorris’s Dutch film ‘A Question of Silence’ (1982), is considered one of the fundamental films in early feminist filmmaking. The film follows Janine, a physiatrist, and her journey to discover why three women (Andrea, Annie and Christine) murder a male shopkeeper.…

Gender Inequality in the Film Industry needs to be talked about If you can’t name 5 female directors that have directed more than 3 films, gender inequality exists in the film world. There is a huge pay, equality, opportunity, and bais gap between men and women in the film industry. For every 5 men working, there is 1 woman (Zurko). As a women pursuing film, it’s discouraging how i will have less opportunity and wage than someone else just because of my gender.…
