College Admissions Essay: A Career As An English Teacher

Improved Essays
When I was in the seventh grade I had an English teacher who was not bad at her job, but she was also not amazing. I do not remember her name as it has been years since she has been my teacher. The thought of her does bring back memories, though. English was my favorite subject, so I really enjoyed that class. My memories had nothing to do with the class, however. Often times I found myself in that class thinking about all of the ways that I could improve it. Instead of calling names by my choice, I could create a wheel with everybody’s names on it. I would then designate a student to spin it when I had a question. It would be awesome, and everybody would love it. I thought of so many ideas and nobody was using them. This blew my mind. “I could be a great teacher” I thought. Usually that thought was followed up by “but teachers are lame”. Well now I am studying to get a degree in English education. My competitiveness got the better of me, and I went from “I can do better” to “I will show them”. My motive for teaching is not to show everybody up, however. That challenge would be way too easy with my revolutionary middle school ideas. My motives have changed, and my passion has grown since then. I soon realized that my ideas were all pretty terrible. I began to take the idea of becoming a teacher seriously in the eighth grade and I realized that this was my calling late in high school. I have many motivations for wanting to teach, but my biggest two are my desire to be a mentor for my students, and my drive to change the …show more content…
My goals for teaching are not limited by the borders of the United States of America. Do not get me wrong, I do want to teach here, but only for a short time. The world needs good educators. Education is the most important necessity for developing countries. It has the power to break the chains of poverty for anybody who commits themselves to it. Not only does the world need good educators, but it also needs Christians. It needs Christians who are willing to go anywhere to share their faith and help the community. I want to change the world through education, and I want to spread the gospel of Christ in the

There are many articles that I have read over the last few weeks, but two in particular really challenged my thinking and philosophy in regards to education. In the article, “Edwin & Phyllis,” Lynn Fendler engages her readers with a meaningful dialogue between an experienced teacher and a prospective educator, debunking some of the more traditional responses that young, perspective teachers might give for wanting to become educators. The truth is that teaching can be anything but glamorous and oftentimes straddles the fine line between causing more harm then the good that it seeks to accomplish in the life of a child. Prospective teachers must not only think about what motivates them in wanting to become educators, but what type of teachers…

One day, I took my one and a half year old nephew to a place called Gymboree, a gym with play equipment to help teach the children how to do various activities. My sister suggested that I should come see him play and climb on the equipment during the lesson. One of the workers came to the front and started the first exercise by singing a song. My nephew clapped, screamed, and danced to show his excitement. As I watched the lesson director sing and encourage the children, I realized how much I enjoyed it and how much I wanted to be in the director's shoes.…

The idea that “a teacher affects eternity” presented by Henry Adams is a powerful one that has always made me stop and pause. Coming from a family of teachers, I have always had much respect for the profession and admired my relatives who have given countless hours, wisdom, and love to their students. I have been fortunate to witness firsthand the idea that Adams has put forth, as I have seen my mom and other relatives truly impact their now adult students. Because of this inspiration, I have decided to pursue teaching and want to better understand the education I will need to become one and what life looks like as a teacher. To understand what the life of a teacher is like, I will gain information about education, day-to-day interaction, and…

1 I come from a long line of educators and administrators on both sides of my family. Various relatives of mine have taught me to understand and appreciate the importance of education. This being the case, they have inspired my decision to be a teacher, preferably an elementary school teacher. Last year, I sat in on my aunt’s third grade class at Washington Irving, an elementary school in my district that I attended for three years. After visiting the classroom a handful of times, I absolutely fell in love.…

Most people change their career decisions multiple times before they actually pick a final job, but I never had an interest in anything other than being a teacher. I have always connected with younger kids over high school or middle school children, which is why I chose to major in Early Childhood Education. I believe that teachers have the ability not only change the world, but improve it. I want to become a teacher because seeing that light bulb go off and seeing the looks on the student’s faces when they get a problem is a great feeling. Many kids are ignored at home or even bullied at home and I want to make all those children feel wanted and to know that someone is there for them and truly does care about them.…

My mother always alleged I became a teacher because I loved to chat, but more than that I loved to share. As always, my mother was correct.
