I Want To Wear Paid Hats In Major League Baseball

There have been many cases of Major League Baseball, MLB, pitchers getting hit in the head with a line drive. Most of these balls are traveling at a speed of over 100 MPH. In the history of the MLB, there has only been one death from getting hit with a ball. That one player was Ray Chapman who got a skull fracture and later died on August 17, 1920. Since then there have been no deaths but many head injuries. Scientists have recently created a hat that has padding on the inside to reduce the pressure of the ball hitting a player's head. The MLB has approved the hats, but many players have had strong opinions about wearing them. These opinions include discomfort, lack of game readiness, and loss of focus. Due to the strong opinions’ of the players, the hats have not been used in any MLB games and should not be used until these concerns are resolved.

When a pitcher is pitching, they are focusing on hitting the strike zone. Any distraction can make them lose focus and not throw strikes. Another MLB pitcher, J.A. Happ, says he doesn’t like the hat because he doesn’t like the way the hat fits on his head. The hat is uncomfortable and distracting. The loss of focus by the pitcher could lead to the whole team losing the game (Weinbaum).
Even with all these complaints, some still believe the pitchers’ should wear protective hats. According to those supporting the hats, the hat will provide more safety and protect the players from head injuries. They feel safety is more important than the complaints of the players. Player’s that don’t wear the hats are risking permanent injury and their careers may end due to the injuries. Those supporting the hat believe the hats should be worn starting now and improvements can be made later
