Babe Ruth was one of the most influential players in baseball history. There are many reasons this is true. He was a player during the time where there were many scandals going on in the game and that truly hurt the game and that fan base. He was able to bring fans back to the game with his style, performance, passion, and character. He was an instantly likeable player that was able to draw fans into a game they had lost faith in.…

Our field trip to Chicago offered me a new way of seeing the city. I have been to Chicago multiple times, yet this trip offered me an experience I was not expecting. It offered me an insight to the darkness that covers the city and the beacons of light that try to shine through that darkness. It opened my eyes to those who are searching for a truth, a love and an acceptance and are finding it in so many different places; whether it is Jesus People USA, South East Friendship Center, Olive Branch, a Krishna Temple or an Islamic Mosque. In each of these places individuals are just trying to figure out where they belong and if they can find acceptance, but what each offers is entirely different.…

I would not have liked to live in the 1920s for many reasons. First of all, the healthcare in the 1920s was very poor. For example, simple surgeries often resulted in bacterial infections and many people died because there was no antibiotics to treat them with. Also there were no vaccines around to prevent childhood diseases as there are today. In the 1920s if you became ill you either got well or you died, the life expectancy was very low.…

The Great Chicago Fire was one of the most horrible disasters in history. The incident was when the city of Chicago experienced a horrible spread of fire from an unknown source. Before the fire, Chicago was a huge city that was mostly made out of a very flammable type of wood, and during the time the city had not gotten any rain, and the winds caused the fire to spread even faster. The fire was said to be started at Catherin O’Leary’s barn, and many people say that it started when she was milking her cow, the cow kicked over an oil candle and the fire started to spread, but other theories such as a comet hitting the area are present.…

There are many reasons why I would like to go to the University of Chicago, but I’d like to start off with the academic aspect of the university. While not specifically a Liberal Arts college, it seems to me that “The Core” is very akin to a Liberal Arts curriculum in the sense that it forces you to expand yourself into different disciplines. I am a big believer in learning about everything because, as I have found, everything is interconnected. With “The Core” curriculum at the University of Chicago, that message of nondiscriminatory learning is clearly emphasized and I know that I will grow as both a person and a student in that kind of an environment. Once I complete “The Core” curriculum, I will be able to focus more on my major working with world-renown faculty solving the world’s problems one step at a time.…

In La Jetee, my interpretation of watching the film was a young man traveling in time as an experiment. Although as I continue watching, there are details within the film such as the background sounds, transitions of photos, and the still photos that give a deeper meaning than of a Sci-fi movie shown this year. In this essay, I will explain how La Jetee uses transitions as well as background sounds to emphasize the still images meaning of time and reality. Chris Marker creates an illusion of time and memory within the making of La Jetee. This film shows a contrast of sci-fi films compared to the more modern ones.…
