Band Leadership Qualities

To begin, I would like to first start off by saying, that it has been a goal of mine since day one in entering this band program, of being a section leader for the high brass section. Coming into this program my parents’ have told me several stories of when they were in band, and this influenced and greatly bucked me up into pursuing band in high school. Since my first day of band camp I have enjoyed being a part of this band program, and even consider it as my second family, which was all the more reason for me to strive for a position as a section leader. I feel that I possess the qualities and the skills needed to become a true leader in this band program. A leader that can be trusted to lead a group of individuals, and to be looked upon as someone that can be respected among his peers and other band members. One of these qualities that I possess, is a hard working state of mind. I believe in striving, …show more content…
If section leader, I want there to be trust in my section. I want my section to know that they can trust me with anything they need to confront me with, and that I can trust them to be honest with me when things come about in the section. I want them to be able to confront me with anything that may concern them, whether it be about someone else in the section, or another section that is bothering them, or it being a problem with how I am running the section. If someone in the section doesn’t like how I run a particular part of the section, then I am going to find a solution to the problem and work things out with the person, to see if we can find some common ground on the issue. I also hope that next year we can get section leaders that have the same mentality as I do so that we can all come together and collaborate with each other on how we can improve rehearsals, and discuss how we can solve problems within each other’s

I believe myself to be outspoken enough to command band members to dress to one another, yet not too intimidating as to drain the fun out of the process. Since freshman year, I have improved upon my dressing to forms and getting to the right dot at the right time and having participated in theater has augmented my appreciation for correct spacing and saying true to the drill written in our drill books. I would love to see both underclassmen and upperclassmen improve upon their marching skills and ability to make forms and I would be honored to help them do so. As a brass captain, I feel as though I would benefit the band because I am enthusiastic and would encourage the brass put forth 100% effort toward every warm-up and play-through of the music. I would be sure to emphasize nuances of the music in rehearsal, such as dynamic changes and accent marks because I believe that a musical performance--no matter the ensemble--is not truly successful without genuine expression.…

After that, I did everything I could to lead, I ran for Band Vice President but was the only person out of the 4 people that were running to be picked, everyone else was “co-vice president. ” I even suggested Color guard captain but only to be told that they had already chosen someone else. I realized that perhaps leadership in band was simply not my calling. I continued to pursue other leadership positions outside of band, and I am now working towards becoming the teen director for…

Successful organizations all require 2 things: a strong team and strong leaders to direct the team to victory, and the Marching Pioneers is no exception to this rule. With an ensemble as large as the Marching Pioneers, there is no physically possible way 4 top tier leaders can give everyone the attention they need. Section leaders are necessary for the success of our fine organization, and there’s nothing more satisfying than being part of a leadership team that can add to the already growing success of this talented group. Here are just a few reasons why I would like to be in the next generation of saxophone section leaders. My heart is beating quickly, my mouth is dry, and as I look at the familiar faces in front of me, their judging eyes make them seem like strangers. I struggle to get them to quiet down and we begin our hour long sectional, which I have to lead. It was the first day of my third year in marching band and at the end of last year, with the graduation of the previous section leader, I was granted his important position. Being a competitive person, I was extremely self conscience of how my section made me look. I hated being blamed for their errors and was exceedingly harsh towards them during sectionals.…

From middle school to high school, band became a vital part of my life. It was all I knew, it was where I felt comfortable, and this was where I pratically began learning about my leadership skills. However, my curiousity grew when I was introduced to Class Council. I thought that there was no difference, and I naively thought that since I have been a part of a leadership role for about 4 years, everyone knows me, so I thought Class Council could not be so hard. I was terribly wrong.…
