Why do you want to be a physician assistant?” I have been asked this question so many times that I can almost tell when someone is about to ask me that before they do. Through deep reflection, volunteering at clinics and hospitals, shadowing doctors, and leadership experiences and seminars in college, the thought of dedicating my life towards saving others provides me with prodigious satisfaction and convinces me that my life’s efforts have created a huge positive impact in the world. Becoming a physician assistant was not a decision I made at the drop of a hat, instead it’s a summation of signs and events and a culmination of self-realization and a life-long dream. I am ready and willing to continue to devote myself towards achieving this…

Growing up, I have always wanted to dedicate myself to doing something special in life. I was born in a village in Mexico where public health and education were very limited. My mother was one of the women in the village who would take care of the sick; she learned everything she knew from my grandmother. When we got there, I saw my mother prepare some medicine and giving it to the ill child.…

We are sex segregated into jobs from childhood to adulthood because at an early age we are encouraged by other people to choose a career that we can do. For example, when I was younger people would ask me what I wanted to be when I was older and I would always say a doctor. Their response would always be the similar “well that’s going to be quite the challenge.” I never knew if that was because it would be a lot of schooling and a lot of work or if it was because there wasn’t a lot of women in this profession. According to the reading “Women were 6 percent of those getting MDs in 1960, 23 percent in 1980, 43 percent in 2000, and 49 percent in 2007 (Paula England 346).…

With that being said, I am focusing on majors that I am interested in and passionate about. This past summer, I took an Online Consumer Economics class and I absolutely loved it!…

Talcott Parsons describes illness as, “the sick person, is in some respect disabled from fulfilling normal social obligations” (Parsons, 1951: 453). Parsons upholds that when defining illness, it must be described as outside the range of normal, something that is interfering with ordinary life. Being exempt from normal social obligations due to illness, is arguably problematic for not only how people perceive our identities, but also how we value our own. When concerning our identities, Goffman explains how, society establishes the means of categorising persons and the complement of attributes felt to be ordinary and natural for members of each of these categories (Goffman, 1963: 5). The aforementioned theory of social construct by Goffman,…

The process of how something so minuscule can grow into something so beautiful as well as knowing that as a midwife I have played a part to bring that most beautiful thing into the world excites me. In this paper, I will argue that commercial surrogacy neither degrades, nor commodifies, human life and that the exchange of money for surrogacy is not degrading to the labor of pregnancy, but instead shows that there is inherent value in the labor of pregnancy. My argument for this is that surrogacy is a service that many women voluntarily chose to provide in order to help couples that are unable to create a child themselves. It is not only wrong that this service be viewed as degrading; it is in fact fulfilling for many women. Many women feel that by being a surrogate they are able to forever enhance the lives of another couple by providing them with a child they could not otherwise have. One objection to this might be that the intended parents…
