As a child, we spend hours upon hours just looking toward the future. We would sit and imagine what we were going to be in our later years. Re-envisioning ourselves as doctors, engineers and Politian’s, some of us ventured out into the dreams some of us still cling to, the professions of artistry, musicians’ professional athletes. As we age so do our wants, needs and interests, morphing new ideas and dreams that we wish to chase down. I for instance came into the world believing I was capable of being the first black President, but seasons change, years pass and a young idealistic black boy grows with more realistic and achievable expectations. My dreams changed from being iconic and top of the pyramid, to a much deeper and observational role. Around my freshman year I determined I wanted to be a psychiatrist. I came to this conclusion through the help of my grandparents and my uncle, upon their concurring diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, dementia and schizophrenia. After witnessing how these illnesses plagued and damaged not only them, but the people they care about, I was determined to help the victims of all mental diseases and their support system.
