Good citizen essay Understanding and Adapting

People can't always get what they wants. No one can ever always get what they one in

this world.Just like a society won't be able to get perfect expectations out of the people in

it. A good citizen is a person who fights for racial equality and has respect for a persons

culture or beliefs by giving people a place in society or by giving other races a chance in a

society because if one person in a society didn't obey the law or let other races be equal to

each other; then they would set bad examples to other citizens, and some people in that

society might follow which would give the lawmakers and people who

Local governments eventually adapt with society to

distribute equal housing units to citizens. Another author and example that would follow

behind these topics is Julia Alvarez from the short story, "I want to be Miss America". She

would agree with this because in her article, she explains how when she moved to the

United States from the Dominican Republic, she had high expectations of fitting in as a

citizen and society would make this hard for her and her family since they were not racially

equal with whites or didn't quite understand the American culture. "Our teachers and

classmates at the local Catholic schools referred to us as [Porto Ricans] or [Spanish]. No

one knew where the Dominican Republic was on the map" (Alvarez 5). Julia Alvarez is a

person that doesn't know what to expect (culture wise) in the United States at first until she

later gets used to the culture and the way citizens in America get treated by society. Even

though Julia Alvarez deals with American society throughout the story, and even figures out

part of the culture, by the end of the article, she admits that she still sees herself as

True citizens must go beyond the "right" expectations of a society by sometimes doing

the wrong expectations in order to have the right outcome. Cheating is a wrong expectation

in a society, and even though a society thinks cheating is never the right answer, there are a

few cases where it may be a good thing. From the article, "What do school teachers and sip

wrestlers have in common", by author Steven J. Dubner, he explains how cheating is a part

of every citizens life, and how it may not always be a bad thing in a society because it is

naturally a part of many people's lives and there may be some cases where cheating can be

used as a slight benefit for some people. "It is the third grader who, worried about not

making it to the fourth grade, copies test answers from the kid sitting next to him" (Steven

J. Dubner 1). This example of how cheating may be a benefit might not be clear for some

people because most people probably view cheating on a test, (whether it's just to pass a

grade or not), as a meaningless act because the person who is cheating is not using the

mind of there own. However, this is still taking about a 3rd grader trying to pass a test

In order to get ahead and succeed in life, many Americans in our society today are throwing away their morals and creating what is named by Callahan as the "Cheating Culture". In the preface of his book, he claims that Americans who choose to cheat within this culture are welcomed and praised. It occurs in a variety of areas including business, sports, and education. This has resulted in what is described as a "Winner-take-all-society" in which everyone has become more competitive. Throughout the book, Callahan explains the problems that have lead to the development of cheating as a norm with the use of numerous examples from corporate scandals to situations that happen in everyday life like downloading free music.…

As it is seen in the students’ responses at Lawrence Academy in Alyssa Vangelli, they said that they did “...not see it as their responsibility” when asked to report cheating (Source B). Another example are the Harvard students in the article about honor codes by Jennifer Dirmeyer and Alexander Cartwright who “...are skeptical that signing a piece of paper will suddenly cause a cheater to change their ways” (Source C). It can be later seen in Dirmeyer and Cartwright’s article that honor codes that are strictly enforced managed by students reduces cheating due to punishments and a social disapproval. Additionally, referring back to McCabe and Pavela’s article, “...the highest levels of cheating are usually found at colleges that have not engaged their students in active dialogue on the issue of academic dishonesty” (Source F). Evidently, maintaining an honor code within the school is proven to reduce…

American democracy was founded on the principles of equality and freedom. Yet, there has been consistent civic exclusion and inequality that have plagued our country since its founding. America’s democracy that is devoted to equality has excluded racial minorities and has had unequal statuses for numerous racial groups throughout its history which has shaped the prevalent conception of American citizenship. People have often been and still are noticeably and/or discreetly excluded from citizenship or the complete benefits of citizenship. Yet, America boasts equality for all.…

However, the pressure to succeed in a classroom setting has become so intense that some students have begun cheating for a variety of reasons. Although I have never cheated myself, I can honestly see the appeal in taking shortcuts when deadlines pile up with no end in sight. Critics of those who cheat can easily point at a cheating student and discuss how poor of a student they are, but the critics never stop to consider the amount of pressure a student truly is under. Cheating has always been considered a terrible act that shows poor character, however, what acts are considered cheating and are not are often fuzzy to students.…

Have you ever questioned why someone cheated on you? Have you ever been accused of cheating on someone? Many people have asked these questions, in fact, 41 percent of marriages have had one or both spouses admit to infidelity, and that’s only the people who actually admitted to being unfaithful (Infidelity Statistics). The definition of cheating is different for every person you ask. Some people see cheating as even looking at another person, others are more open to the action of cheating.…

As we mature and enter into relationships with one another, we make mistakes of all types, but some mistakes can quickly end a relationship. Cheating has always been a big taboo in relationships because the whole point of two people entering into a relationship is to be exclusive to only each other. In a pre-marital relationship you can just walk away with nothing holding you two together but what if the two are married. Instead of plain cheating it has become adultery which is a breach of the marriage contract between two people. I claim that adultery is impermissible because at the time you sign the marriage document and or bound religiously, you enter into an agreement with the other person in which you will be faithful to the other fully.…
