“When I grow up, I want to be a veterinarian.” If you knew me at age 5, you knew that I wanted to be a vet. I didn’t know much when I was five; I didn’t know why my parents were fighting, I didn’t know when I would see my dad next, I didn’t know why my mom was so sad, I didn’t know what diabetes was, I didn’t know why my sister had lost so much weight, but I knew I wanted to be a vet.

In the first grade, I was just a happy, oblivious kid. It was just a normal day and I was waiting for my mom to pick me up. I jumped in the car after school, and immediately knew something was wrong. This wasn’t my happy mom who would usually pick me up and ask me how my day was. This mom was quiet and had a very worried look. Instantly, this huge fear came over me: My dog is dead. As we drove through Krystal’s to get some chicken nuggets, I thought of the many ways my beloved Bradford could’ve died. Car accident? Food Poisoning? Zombie apocalypse? The first step to obtaining a DVM is to complete undergraduate school. Several schools only require 45-90 undergraduate hours, but the school I am interested in, requires a bachelors degree. Finding a position in the field of veterinarian medicine has a high chance, due to the current rate of attrition, many Veterinarians are starting to retire and those places will need to be filled.…
