When I had not yet fully established a plan for the future, I came across a turning point and decided to pursue a graduate study in nursing. Suffering from acute and chronic stomach cramps I had since high school, I went to see physicians quite often in the last quarter of college. One of the physicians was a nurse practitioner, which was an occupation that I was not familiar with at the time. I asked her what a nurse practitioner was, and she was delighted to explain her job and how much she enjoyed it. After coming home, I researched careers in nursing; I was fascinated by a wide variety of career options and pathways that nursing field had. I, then, recalled my dream of becoming a doctor and working in the medical field. I also remembered my passion and effort I used to put in order to achieve my goal. Moreover, as the nurse practitioner did, I would wish to inspire others and give them another opportunities. Ever since I have set a goal to reach, I have become mentally, physically, and spiritually healthier and stronger. Being a nurse practitioner is more than writing out prescriptions but providing better health educations to avert preventable diseases. According to the WHO, chronic diseases and poverty are closely related; however, low-income medical clinics often have not enough physicians when there is a high demand for physicians. For that reason, I plan to volunteer at such clinics for once a week or twice a month. If I would work as a volunteer, the clinics would use their financial resources on patients. I am also aware of this situation at the low-income clinics because my parents were used to be in the Alameda Alliance for Health program. They had to wait for months to see their physicians because physicians were hardly
