Statement Of Purpose To Become A Nurse

"I want to be a nurse because I want to help those who are injured and in need." This is how I answered a question at the end of every test I took in my Theology class back in elementary school. "What do you want to be when you grow up and why?" Sometimes they would ask us to draw and color a picture of what we 'd be when we grow up. My picture would be a girl in the white nursing uniform dress and the nurse 's cap helping an injured person or a sick patient. "I want to be a nurse because I want to help those who are injured and in need," was always my answer. Throughout the years I never developed my answer to that question nor change anything when I draw my picture. I didn 't have a deeper reasoning or a past experience to explain why I chose …show more content…
Through a career in medical field I 'll be able to extend a helping hand to those who are injured and in need. I 'll be able alleviate the condition of millions of people who are in need of medical attention. It may sound cliché and corny but it is my truth. However, if I was to take my Theology exam and encounter the question "what do you want to be when you grow up and why," I would answer it differently now. Helping those who are in need will always be a primary reason if not, a go-to reason when explaining a career choice. But what drives someone to pursue that career would be something deeper than helping others. What drives me to aspire to become a doctor, a cardiothoracic surgeon was this curiosity I had back in sixth grade when I was shown a clip of a beating heart taken out of someone 's body. It was fascinating how the heart was still beating and I had this surge of desire to be able to have that fragile but strong heart beating on my palm. Then I wonder how empowering it would be to have a heart beating against my palm, knowing that every beat is a sign of life and hope. At times I 'm so caught up with papers due and though science classes to survive every semester that I forget why I 'm doing what I 'm doing right now. Then out of the blue, I hear stories that make me remember why I chose this …show more content…
My friend, Shaira, graduated this year with a bachelor’s degree on computer science. She was looking forward for this moment to come because she wanted to repay her mother for all the sacrifices she made to put her to a good school. Her mother passed away days after her graduation. This is a story I can empathize with because I grew up in the Philippines and I know how hard it is to attain a college degree due to financial issues. Many students in the Philippines who are not lucky enough to get scholarships work double or triple jobs to be able to pay for their college expenses. On top of that they also have to pay for rent, food, electricity, and most of the time, school expenses of their younger siblings. Sometimes it is impossible for others to ever go to college because their parents’ jobs including theirs is not enough to cover for college.
I know how important it is to earn and save money. I know that medical school is expensive. Although I have access to federal loans, I don’t like to depend on them so I’ve been saving as much money as I can. I grew up with the awareness
