For a long time, dating back to my childhood, I had always wanted to pursue my vocational calling in the medical field. My parents encouraged me to take on medicine as my future career. I even pretended to play doctor with my friends during recess at elementary school. One friend would play the doctor role, I acted as the nurse, and the others would come in as sick patients. I have always found science-related courses the most enjoyable and interesting classes during high school. Many people ask, “Why pursue nursing when you can become a doctor instead?” Based on my experiences on clinic or hospital visits, nurses interact with their patients than doctors do. When my grandmother fell ill and my aunt admitted her to Memorial Hermann Hospital, my mother and I visited her often. During each visit, I would notice that the nurses concerned themselves with my grandmother during her stay. As their job required, the nurses made frequent stops by my grandmother’s room to ensure she rested well. Every visit, I would encounter a nurse much more often than a doctor. The nurses would sometimes even take the time to learn more about my grandmother to connect with her and my family. For me, I want to take on a career where I can earn more than money on a paycheck and learn to become passionate about. Furthermore, I would develop greater socializing skills through interactions with patients. Earning a “thank-you” or connecting with patients
