I volunteered for an organization called Service Works. It’s a nationwide organization that helps young adults in developing communities to build acquired skills to prepare for college and their career paths. After reading about them and volunteering, I wrote about them because of its commitment towards helping young adult in the community. Service Works provide success coaches for young individuals as role models, and people that they can interact with if they have any problems, questions, or need advice regarding their career paths. We asked some of them who were willing to talk to us, what got them into the position they are in today. We wanted to add the information to our Gofundme page as an evidence so that people could hear their stories. Some explained that they chose to leave home, which resulted into money crisis, and it puts them into the position to be homeless. Others said that they do not feel like they fit into the society because of their health issues. A few others said it was a lack of employment. With their feedback, I hoped that people who see them as “animals” as shown in the video clip from class lecture, “Maspeth Homeless Shelter Meeting,” can have a new perspective towards them, and help them get back up on their feet. In the video clip, it showed that the homeless took an abandoned hotel to stay, but the community was furious towards them. If the society can give them a place to stay during the night, and the during the day they look for something to do, it will help their …show more content…
Without this organization, I would not have had any idea of what is going on in the community. This volunteer opportunity gave me ideas about what I want to focus on when I start working in a career in the field of public administration. This organization is important to me because it gave me a clear understanding of what public service or public administration do for the community. I will also volunteer again because it provided me with the opportunity to interact with citizens of the community. After volunteering with this organization, I want to focus my major is in the civil service system, where I can help people who are being ignored. Not only did this organization open my eyes to see what homeless people are going through, it also interests me in other areas, such as the, shifting economy, and poverty. I also want to expand my experience aiding Newark, and also around the

For many years, society has looked down upon the homeless because of their social status. People have been given the notion that the homeless are in the situation that they’re in because of many taboos that society looks down upon like alcohol, drugs, and gambling. People should be showing the homeless compassion and offer help, instead are met with mean actions and awful words towards their way of life. Not all homeless people are in their situation because of addictions. There are a great number of homeless people out there who are veterans that struggle with mental disorders that they received from past wars, such as PTSD, that do not allow them to live a normal life.…
