I shared the poem “Dedication.” I commented on how dedication was depicted in Baudelaire’s view- dedicating some “unhealthy flowers” to someone who was “very dear and very revered/ Master and friend.” I thought this poem was very interesting because dedication to me, has always meant the person you dedicate deserves a lot of respect. This may be because of the Chinese culture I grew up learning- we can never challenge an idea and neither should we try to do something like that. In addition, at the beginning of the class, I quickly learned that in Modernity, most of the works we discuss are writing by Anglos. To make it worse, there are only two Asians in the class dominated by the wealthy and elite class. As a result, I have always thought that it was awkward to share my opinions and views. However, after expressing my concern to Prof. Lee, I learned that as long as I share my opinion, even if it may disrupt the class’s progress in the discussion, I am offering a different perspective of how we should few some of the topics. I have participated more often in group discussions, expressing valuable views that I firmly believe in despite being challenged by my peers. This class has been very challenging in this aspect of speaking and communicating my opinions, however, I think it’s a good challenge because I can see some of the improvement I have made to make myself more comfortable in the discussion space. For the further, I will continue to listen actively to see how I can jump in on the conversation in addition to trying to express myself more often, even if I feel like everyone will disagree
