This semester I was in Educ 2120 and Educ 2130. I had to complete 40 volunteer hours by the end of the semester. I started out at Oasis. Oasis is an afterschool tutoring center for children 3 years old to 3rd grade. Oasis’ purpose is "To build bridges of understanding, appreciation, and love among cultures, faith traditions, social statuses, and with God, fostering wholeness and holiness, thus bringing healing to people 's hearts and peace to their relationships." During my time at Oasis, I was attending the tutoring on Mondays from 2:30-5:00. I worked with the Pre-k age children and almost always had a group of 5-6 boys. I would occasionally have 1 girl in the group. The first thing I really noticed after working with

The biggest thing I really noticed is the children’s behavior. I felt that the younger the child, the less likely they are to listen the first time they are told something. At Oasis, I had Pre-k and could hear myself repeating things multiple times and asking the children to “please sit down” or “please pay attention” or my favorite, “can anyone tell me what I just said?” most of the time no one could tell me what I had just said. In the 1st grade class, the children struggled to ever quiet down. They were all constantly very chatty. Even with the teacher talking you could still hear at least one of their little voices either whispering to their neighbor or shouting something to the whole classroom. The teacher had to constantly do her clapping system, where she claps something and all the children clap back, meaning they are supposed to now zip their lips and listen up. In the 3rd grade class, some children were of course still chatty. However when the teacher threated to move a child’s clip to a different color or simply raised her voice a little saying it’s too loud the children all listened for the most part. So just in those simple cases, you can really tell how age makes a difference of the ability to listen and

I have never been one to spring at opportunities that involved working with kids simply because I was disinterested. In the summer of 2015, my disinterest was turned into a passion when I met the children from Broadlawn. Broadlawn is a public housing community in my city and my church wanted to intercede and help their community. Our church decided that every Tuesday throughout the summer we would go out to Broadlawn to eat, talk, and play with the kids from the neighborhood. After some nagging from friends and family, I decided to tag along one Tuesday to help.…

I observed him carefully as he walked to the door. I knew that time was running out but suppressed the urge to check my watch. I took a deep breath and started counting in reverse under my breath. “Ten, nine, eight, seven…” I didn’t even finish counting when he turned the handle. I watched as the whole building exploded into smithereens, an explosion that resonated even 5 miles away.…

Observation: The YMCA daycare program is very different from Hope. I went back and forth between the two classrooms with children from ages 2 to 4 and I even spent a bit of time in the infant room. I learned more about the different temperaments of the children and how to address them. In addition, I also saw how children three to four years of age did not know how to say what they wanted so they would hit and throw things. I would have to say the biggest thing that I learned today was figuring how to get a positive behavior and not to reinforce a negative behavior.…

I saw only darkness, save the faint glow of lava rocks in a small hole dug in front of me. I breathe in what should be steaming hot air, but it is dry, yet so hot. Even growing up in Tucson where the summer heat can reach 110 degrees, I’ve never experienced something quite like this. I wished I was playing out in that summer heat, this felt like I was being cooked in an oven. I breathe in again, more dry air.…

It was a complete turnaround from the quiet, peaceful atmosphere of rocking babies. The kindergartners were loud—extremely loud. I could barely hear myself think over the thirty energetic youngsters. On top of the constant noise, there was always someone saying, “Teacher, Sam won’t share his ball!”…

Being a student at Queen’s University taught me that the opportunities we seek out teach us about our character and more importantly, about our passions in life; they help us to define our goals and will lead us to be successful. I have been fortunate to gain valuable experience as a Queen’s student, orphanage volunteer, and drop in center volunteer. My experiences shaped my understanding of teaching and learning processes as I learned the valuable qualities that are exhibited by successful educators that establish supportive learning environments for their students. While working in Romanian orphanages this past summer, I learned how each child presents their own challenges as they learn, and communicate differently. In a short time with a great deal of patience and dedication I learned enough of the language as I led games, bible studies, and helped children with conflict resolution.…

All children in the class worked well with each other, and friendships were constructed. Ms. Bell involved children in disagreement resolution as well. Over the past four Christmases I worked with other teens who share the same feeling of responsibility to helping underprivileged students. These students were 9 years old and had to learn in overcrowded classroom on empty stomachs when learning can be a struggle in of itself. However, it does not have to be that way. Many of the children just needed further individual support and care, to give them the motivation needed to reach their full potential. These students from the public education system were similar to flowers.…

It was something I did not plan for. For instance in the listening micro lesson, some of them asked questions or asked me to rewind the audio file while they were supposed to be listening to it and do not disturb their colleagues. I have learned that I have to put some rules from the beginning of the session. For instance, I should tell students to write down their questions and wait till the end of the audio file. Besides, these like-real situations helped me to be more comfortable standing up in front of…

As a biology major who enjoys mentoring and working with youth, I have chosen internships that are related to teaching sciences to youth. These internships are not only important in that they can give me experience in a career path that I am considering, but will also create challenges in which I will need to push myself to overcome. Since I came from the same neighborhoods that I have selected most of my internships to be at – where there are many underprivileged kids who relied on free summer school programs to keep themselves occupied and retain material learned during the school year – doing these internships are my way of giving back, saying thanks to the community, and to keep these public school programs running. I remember that the…

During my CSL I have learned four very important things that I will use every day in my teaching career. I learned the importance of knowing students names and the importance of not ignoring the little things. I also learned that it is okay to tell students their work is not good enough and that having high expectations for students will help them grow as learners. Of course I have learned many other small things, but the above mentioned four are in my opinion the most influential for my future career teaching.…
