The Importance Of Word Change In Writing

Decent Essays
As I sit here at my dinner table, surrounded by various sloppy notes, unpolished drafts, failed essay attempts, and mediocre ideas, one thing remains constant; I still have a lot to learn. However, I have picked up on a few points you’ve attempted to solidify in our minds, and I hope I can portray what I’ve learned and what I still need to improve on in a lucid fashion throughout the contents of this letter. Let’s get started.

I often over exaggerate the words I use, which causes the reader to stumble, or question my meaning in the writing. For example, in my reflection for my review on the movie Pixels, I said that “frustration overwhelmed my thoughts and emotions.” This excessive approach only created a disconnection between my words and the audience. This over statement occurs far too often in my writing, and needs to be corrected by the use of dictionaries, thesauruses, and constantly reading books to enhance my vocabulary. Also, along the

Organization, or the internal structure of ideas, must have an intentional lead (opening paragraph), a well-developed body of information, and an ending that is logical and thoughtful. I believe a great example of where I accomplished this trait of effective writing can be seen in my review of the movie Pixels. My review established a main idea in the opening paragraph by using a hook and opinionated statement, then supported my claim with key examples in the body, and finished strongly in the conclusion by stating a call to action. I also effectively used transitions and concluding sentences; both key factors in enhancing the organization of the piece. In the future, I hope to continue my strength of organization in every paper I

This letter is being written to you, to let you know my thoughts about how much this class has enabled me to grow as a writer and student. As a writer I have many new acquired strengths. One of these newly acquired strengths is that I have the ability to write an essay that assess other author’s pieces of work. Before this class, I wrote very generic five paragraph essays that let the reader know, that the author of a certain piece of work was a good writer and captivated the audience. Now I am able to state the authors’ purpose and the rhetoric terms that he or she uses to get their purpose across to their audiences.…

Political leaders have written numerous speeches throughout the years, in order to persuade countless people to adhere to resolving a problem that is in our society. The liberating language of political figures can bring about alterations in a society that is plagued with unwanted situations. In George Orwell’s, “Politics and the English Language”, he tried to correct our language that has been spoiled by political leaders due to their constant use of unnecessary words. This concept of using language to connect to people is also mentioned in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s writing, “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” His letters allowed him to communicate with numerous individuals and gave others the power to rise above segregation in their society.…

Even though it does not feel as though I have improved much, I know that the grades on my essays say differently. After looking over my essays, I noticed that I have become better with using evidence to support my papers. This, to me, is my best accomplishment. I have also improved on my word choice, organization, and how I use my quotes. If you were to compare the first paper I wrote to the last paper I wrote, I feel as though it would be obvious on how much my organization has improved.…

Since the beginning of my first year at school I have been learning to read and write. Throughout these years I have had a lot of experiences with reading and writing. All through high school we would write responses and essays over books we read. Once I entered college everything changed; I began to learn about writers and people who were known because of their great works of literature. In college, you are held to a higher standard and responsibility than you are in high school; this challenge has encouraged me to work hard and because of this I have become better at writing.…

During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

It has been nine years since I have attended college and eleven since I have taken an English course. The first English Composition class I took in 2004, was very dry, and the expectations from what I remember were extremely low. We read excerpts, wrote reflection papers, and that pretty much sums it up. When I reviewed the classes needed for my current degree of interests, I immediately convinced myself English Composition would be the easiest way for me to ease myself back into college. My expectations were low only because of what I experienced before, and I felt this was the place to start in order to help bring my confidence up about returning to college.…

Title Enrolling the EOF program has lighten up a path in life that would have gone completely undiscovered had I walked alone. Along the path was my introduction to college writing, a class that has improved my writing skills profoundly. At first the tasks given to us on the syllabus seemed daunting, almost insurmountable within the five-week period of the program; it seemed even more inconceivable with the class being only twice a week. However, with the guidance and instruction given to me by the professor and peers I was able to strengthen my work as a student.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…
