I Pursue My Advanced Placement Calculus Class

Decent Essays
When I was young, I was enthusiastic and always passionate about winning. Especially in math, I studied hard for it, because math was the only subject that I was interested and confident about it. During elementary to middle school, I always got A for math test even I did not prepare for it. Also, during freshmen to junior yar, math was still not difficult to me. Therefore, I could maintain my math grade as an A.

However, when I became a senior, I took Advanced Placement Calculus class, and I failed my first test, because I could not even understand what my math teacher says during the class. When I saw a sixty-three in my grade book, I was extremely disappointed to myself. I realized I will not pass my math class if I do not study hard,

Kohn’s article “The Case against Grades” (Kohn, 2011) effectively captures the anxiety that most students have about grades. “In fact, students would be a lot better off without either of these relics from a less enlightened age” (Kohn, 2011) Kohn writes. I agree with Kohn’s position in this article because there were many days in high school where I remember skipping due to the fact that I didn’t fully understand what was being taught to me. I, in turn, grew anxious about not being good enough and started failing.…

Math has always come fairly easily to me, starting when I took Algebra 1 as a seventh grader. I’ve excelled many years, even going into my school’s math and science program where the students are given honors math and science classes from ninth grade through twelfth grade. I’ve always been a step ahead in math so that is how I was able to enroll in calculus last year. Everyone else in my class was going to take BC Calculus so I thought I should too, I could handle it if they could.…

The Grades Challenge Freshman year was a difficult year for my grades. I was failing a few classes and it seemed like the harder I focused on the percentage, the farther I got away from it. I talked to my teachers about how I could try to get my grades up and was simply told “you won’t get a better grade.” I was stuck with what I had is what I was told, and they ended up being right about that year. I was worried that maybe something was wrong; maybe I wasn’t as smart as I used to be.…

This year I decided to challenge myself academically. I made the decision of taking four AP classes and math analysis so, to say the least it has been a difficult journey. In addition, out of all the classes I took I struggled the most with AP Chemistry. The material is pretty difficult to understand, even after spending a couple hours to review my notes some things would still be a little blurry. I was failing my test.…

Throughout my entire school career, I have been frustrated at my math classes, but it wasn’t that they were going too fast; it was that they were going too slow. Every opportunity to move ahead I was given, I used. When I was given the chance to move up from Algebra II to pre-calculus, I studied for hours every day up until the day of the test came. “Beep! Beep!…

Academics have always been a huge part of my life. I started learning addition and subtraction before I could read at an advanced level. From that moment on, I was hooked on learning. I knew from a young age that teaching was what I was meant to do. Shadowing a teacher for a day in eight grade cemented for me that I was going to be a teacher. While the age of the student I was wanting to teach has changed as I've gotten older that drive to teach has never left. Working as an Educational Assistant at St. Louis Community College has only poured gasoline on that fire and passion for teaching. I can no longer put off pursuing my education to become a mathematics professor.…

I was an average middle schooler: average in sports, academics, and in confidence. Being average caused me to doubt my abilities and have a negative view of myself. This took a turn, however, when I tested into Algebra a year early during the beginning of eighth grade. When this happened, I felt above average, like I was finally excelling at something. This didn’t last long because Algebra was a tough class that tested my abilities and my mind to their capacity.…

I almost had a heart attack when I received my math test with a big fat red F on top of it. It was the third F I've gotten alone in just math class. I was good in the other subjects such as, physical education, science, and reading. The only thing that I had trouble with was math, I hated math and I didn't understand a single thing that was happening when she taught a certain subject. I was going to have to do summer school if I didn’t get my grade up, and I already had my vacation planned out.…

One challenge I've experienced during my pursuit in engineering and my education as a whole has been AP Calculus AB. Considering I've had high grades in previous maths, I assumed that calculus would not be a problem. However, those previous classes could not have given me a sense of what a college level math class would be like, which I learned very quickly. Calculus has been a surprising taste of what college learning is like. I now know that much of the learning is going to be one's own responsibility.…
