Some believe that college is good but that a person has to be careful on how they go about it. Should a college student do what they love? Should they pick a major right of the spot? According to Jeff Haden’s “Do What You Love? #@&** That!,” picking a career that involves one of your passions can be dangerous. One of Haden’s reasoning behind his is that, “it’s easy to confuses a hobby…for a profound passion.” (463) A lot of times a person will pick a degree plan based off of what they think they like to do, and as they continue to study on said topic, they will realize that they don’t truly want to do this as a career. Some are lucky and realize this early in their studies but some don’t figure this out until they have drop a lot of money on their schooling. Another point of Haden’s is that “passion takes time.” If a person is truly passionate about something, then they have/will take the time to completely understand every aspect of their “passion.” The significance behind this, is to show that college can better your life but if you jump into a specific degree plan, it could lead a student down a path that they may not necessarily want for their …show more content…
There are many pros and cons to each side plus the awkward middle ground of doing college but needing to do it the right way. In my opinion college is important and everyone should strive to earn a higher education. Yes, finding a job will be hard after college and having a degree will not get you a free ride but it will be better the not having one at all. People with a college degree will have a higher chance of getting the job they want. There are a lot of companies that refuse to even look at an application if that person doesn’t have any kind of college credit. The reason for this is, even if the degree you have doesn’t directly relate to the job you are applying for, just the fact that you went to college means that you learned important life skills. Skills such as problem solving, dedication, time management, as well as being able to work with others. So as you can see, college is important but I agree with the middle ground. If you go to college you need to do research about all the classes, you are interested in taking. Look into the specific field you would like to study but you need to be careful not to pick a major right away. Take most of the basics first, find something you actually like to learn about, take a few classes pertaining to that field and work from there. There is one more tip I can give, be patient.
