I Loved Her First By Heartland
This song fits well with the poem At The San Francisco Airport because it is about a father letting go of his daughter. In the poem the father is sad that is daughter is leaving home in order to peruse bigger and better things in life. The father feels like time has passed him by, and he missed out on her growing up. Now that it is time to say goodbye and let his daughter move on he is struggling, he doesn’t want to let go but he know it is for the best. In I loved her first by Heartland we find another father letting go of his daughter as well, he is sad in a way because he is not the only man in his daughter’s life anymore. Affairs are lies, and once a person starts one it is hard to keep the story straight. In this poem the reader sees the struggle that takes place after a night out with a mistress. They have to make sure that they don’t take anything of the other persons, and they cannot even go home until everyone has went into their rooms for the night for fear of being noticed by someone they might know. Affairs put an emotional stress on people, and the reward is not worth the risk that goes into it. We’ll sweep out the ashes in the morning by Gram Parsons is a perfect song to relate to leaving the motel. It shows the struggle to keep the affair hidden. In the verse “Each time when we meet we both agree that it's for the last time” they try to end it but in reality they keep coming back for more. Gram Parsons sums up how they keep the affair hidden just like in the poem when Snodgrass says “take nothing of one another’s leave behind your license number only.
