I Love To Read

With high school coming to an end so quickly I am constantly reminiscing back to when I was younger and how easy it seemed. With the dooming thought of "it only gets harder from here" looming over my head it seems like such a wonderful idea to just go back to elementary school when things were so much more simple for myself and my peers. While I was never very good at sports I was wonderful at reading. I had books piled high, in my bedroom, on my desk, in my backpack, everywhere! My parents would often have to get onto me for reading when I should be in bed.
But why wouldn't I love to read? I was an only child, with a big imagination, I didn't always have the luxury of always having someone to run and play at the creek with or even always

I became literate at a very young age around one or two years old and people could understand what I wanted. For example, bolitas (meant balls in Spanish) cooked beans and no bolitas was refried beans. I had a way of commutating with my family but sometimes I would forget what the word was and I used to describe the item itself. They would eventually understand what I mean. Unlike one of the cases in Deborah Brandt’s Sponsors of Literacy, I did not have a tutor or anything like that.…

Growing up as a child I totally despised books, I hated reading all together. I did not did not enjoy reading alone and I surely did not appreciate reading in class. It was not that I was incapable of reading, in fact I always scored exceptionally well on all reading segments of standardized tests, I just really did not see a requirement for it. Throughout my middle school years the english department required all students to read a specific number of books every month, so there was no chance to get of staying away from it. In the end I would be acquainted with Percy Jackson, and The Lighting Thief , a book series that would soon change how I felt about reading all together.…

I always read as a kid. I was the small boy who plowed through books day and night, my mom scrambling to and from the library just to keep up with me. The only time I could escape was when I snuggled down with a good book and let my imagination fly free with the Wicked Witch of the West, a horse called Misty, the book thief Liesel Meminger, and Lucy, the youngest of the Pevensies. However, as I grew older, I read less for enjoyment and more for school. I’m not a book nerd--I don’t even think I’m a nerd at all. Take my older sister, Lillian. Now, she was the book nerd of the family.…

Throughout this course I have learned quite a bit, and considering that this is the second time I am taking this course, that is saying something. However, I did show up for this semester a lot more than I did in my previous semester so that’s probably a contributing factor. I also believe that I paid attention far more this semester than I did the last time I took this course. English 1101 has actually been one of my favorite courses I have taken at SRTC. Perhaps that’s why I’m taking it a second time.…

If I could get one do-over in life it would be elementry school. Nothing bad happened in elementary school for me to want to redo it, it was just the best 4 years of my life (even though I’m only 15 years old). It's not like a “Man, i wish i could go back and fix that” redo, but more like a “Gosh, it would be great to go back” redo. Let me explain to you why elementary school would be my one time do-over. For one,I was care-free in elementary, mainly because I barely had homework, and when I did it was only a crossword puzzle or something.…

I wanted to go out and experience things or just figure things out on my own. I saw reading as a barrier to those experiences. Reading got in the way of that.…

What do you remember from high school? Friends, sports, pep rallies, standardized tests. You wouldn 't normally think of standardized tests when thinking of things you remember from high school, but for many students that struggled with them in high school it is a large part of their high school experience. We should stop using Standardized tests in Texas schools because they have changed the way teachers teach in a detrimental way, have delayed students’ graduations, add unneeded stress to students’ and put a strain on already tight school budgets.…
