Despite texts being written in different eras, they can still reflect similar enduring values that can transcend their own contexts. These values are the subconscious ideals that influence the way all human beings behave and act. Such ideals are shaped by the sociocultural, economic and historical contexts. This idea is clearly seen through the comparison of the novel, ‘The Great Gatsby’ by F Scott Fitzgerald and the Sonnets of the Portuguese, XIV and XXII by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Regardless of the diverse contexts and perspectives of Browning and Fitzgerald, it is highly evident that their exploration of human nature 's value of love and hope are indeed shared between the texts.…

In the sequence of ‘The Great Gatsby’, we face off with multiple accounts of the women’s role in that era of history. The author was a man that goes by the name of F. Scott Fitzgerald, the creator of ‘The Great Gatsby’, and he constructed the characters to represent deceit, obsession, greed, power, and romance. Even though this novel was marked for the men’s deception and the women’s flirtatious ways, the three women’s behavior, Daisy Buchanan, Myrtle Wilson, and…

Why Everyone In An American Classroom Should Read the Great Gatsby A extremely common question from high school students is “why should we spend our time reading old books and plays from a stupid list; especially, when there are more important things are going on in life and school? The reason why specific books are included on reading list is simple. However, in American culture, a hero can also just be “an ordinary individual who finds the strength to preserve and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles”, as Christopher Reeve says. By trying to step over barriers built by wealth and social status to pursue his dreams, as a middle-lower class man, Jay Gatsby absolutely qualifies to be a hero. Nevertheless, instead of successfully achieving his dreams, he fails tragically. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby, the protagonist Gatsby suits to be a tragic hero because he lives in his own false reality and tries to make his unachievable…
