Every year, those who enjoy the sport risk life and limb to participate – many escape seemingly unharmed, but countless others will carry life-altering physical and mental burdens with them for the duration of their lives because of playing football. With these risks in mind, it can be a challenge to maintain love for sport as harmful and hazardous as football; yet, I have seen all the good that this game can provide. Football can provide purpose and structure to those who need it most in their lives. The right team can set young athletes on a path of personal and emotional success. Although football allowed me to practice teamwork, leadership, and drive, the true fruit of the process rests in the perseverance as I pursued of my goal. As I reflect on this story, it becomes clear that the process, more than the outcome, shaped my character. My relentless pursuit toward a goal pushed me to practice and form virtuous habits of determination and perseverance. Continuing on my journey despite the ridicule and disapproval from peers, coachers, and community members allowed me to practice and develop courage. Setbacks along the way juxtaposed with signs of encouragement strengthened my sense of patience and hope.
