I Learned In Sherman Alexie's Absolutely True Diary Of A Part-Time Indian

In the novel Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, author Sherman Alexie introduces the reader to Junior, a poor Native American teenager who leaves his reservation to attend nearby white school. Throughout his journey, Junior learns many lessons about life such having hope, accepting others, and friendships. The lessons Junior learns throughout the story changes from having low self - esteem to being more confident about himself and his surroundings.

The first life lessons that Junior learns through his experiences is learning to have hope. We can see this lesson on page 43 where Mr. P, Junior’s teacher says, “You’re going to find more and more hope the farther you walk away from this sad, sad, sad reservation.” This shows us that Mr. P cares about Junior and wants him to have better education and a better future. This lesson impacts Junior by him taking a risk and transferring to an all white school, even though he’s going to be the only Native American at the school and his tribe would be really upset with him. We can see that he learns this lesson on page 94 where it says, “Gordy taught me how to study. Best of all, he taught me how to read.” This quote shows us that he learned this lesson because afterwards Junior and Gordy started hanging out together and were studying together. This lesson changes Junior by someone who was really lonely and depressed to someone who is more outgoing. We can see this impact on page 98 when “And he certainly helped me through school. He not only tutored me and challenged me, but he made me realize that hard work - that the act of finishing, of completing, or accomplishing a task - is joyous.” This shows us how the lesson impacted Junior because, he has a friend that encourages him to thrive in his education. Since Junior decided to be outgoing he was able to make more friends, which boosted his confidence
