Diversity Class Reflection

In this Intro to Diversity class I learned about the world around me and a lot about myself. I was able to see things in a different light and really think about my views on others. Some of the views that I had going in to the class were changed slightly and some were strengthened. With all I learned there are things that I want to work on and improve in myself. Before you can work on changing the world you have to start with yourself. This class was very beneficial to my life and will be beneficial in whatever career I pursue. During this class we explored who are and how we self identify. For me I self identified as a Christian, the oldest sibling, and a traveler. I was able to learn a lot of tips and tricks to help include students from all different types of backgrounds into my classroom. Being able to teach about other cultures and traditions in other cultures can be difficult, but taking this class I was able to think outside the box of how to do this. One thing that I thought about was in teaching English we could read stories about other places or books that are multicultural. For science lessons you could talk about different terrain in other countries and even different terrain throughout the United States. I was interested in learning about how to include other cultures in my classroom because I want to help influence my students to have a global perspective. I was also interested in learning about how exactly inclusion of students with disabilities happens. We talked about how inclusion is based on each individual child, but it is a critical component for education. Every child needs to be in the least restrictive environment. This subject is very dear to me because I have a cousin who has a disability, so I wanted to learn how to make sure every student is

    I think Washburn values diversity because having diversity at a university presents all kinds of thinking and reasoning strategies from different types of students. Also, there are more ways to come up with results and solutions when there is a diverse setting containing students from different backgrounds.
